Denny Hamlin Has Blunt Message For Bubba Wallace After Sunday's Win

As many fans and some analysts predicted, Denny Hamlin dominated at Martinsville. The 23XI Racing co-owner secured yet another win at the track in Sunday's Cook Out 400, edging out his employee Bubba Wallace in the process.

Wallace has been chasing his third career NASCAR Cup Series win for about two years now and finished third on Sunday. He seems to be inching closer though. His performance on Sunday was his second-straight top-five finish.

Another win for Wallace would be great for Hamlin's 23XI team, so he was willing to offer him some sage advice.

On the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin explained that Wallace needs to work on his timing more and can't rely solely on speed to get the job done. He said the "approach" Wallace takes could be his key to victory.

“They’ll be able to access where his deficits were compared to me and break that down,” Hamlin said. “At that point, he has a decision to make. If I need to make more speed on corner exit, I have to sacrifice something else somewhere. You can’t just put the throttle down and get more speed on exit.

“It’s an approach thing. Maybe you need to slow up your center a little bit more. Maybe things like that. I think that all that kind of plays a factor, and it’s the constant world that we’re going in every racetrack that we go to, trying to get better.”

Wallace himself feels that his restarts were his Achilles heel at Martinsville. He pledged to resume studying and congratulated Hamlin on his win.

“A good day nonetheless. I’m trying to scratch my head on what I could have done different,” Wallace said after the race, via On3. “My restarts were terrible. One of my best traits, so need to go back and study that. What a great day. Continuing to rebound from the start of our season. Super proud of our group here at the 23 team. McDonald’s Toyota Camry was fast all weekend.

“That final restart, I let that second get away. I don’t know if I had anything for Denny. It would have been fun to try. But all in all, hell of a day for Toyota. Top three. That’s nice. Keep the momentum going, having fun.”

Wallace and Hamlin are both enjoying spots in the top 10 of the NASCAR Cup standings right now. Hamlin ranks sixth with 218 points while Wallace is behind him at eighth with 208 points.
