Denny Hamlin overlooks the ‘Chase Elliott-effect’ and predicts a viewership BUMP in the coming races
Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 season so far has been a huge success for NASCAR on and off the track. Following the release of NASCAR’s Netflix Documentary Full Speed and the impressive Superspeedway racing it has in the first two weeks has resulted in a big boost in viewership. There has been big spike to the NASCAR’s TV rating in broadcast of Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series races.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin who won the Bristol race on Sunday, pointed out that the rating is going bump in the coming races as well. He then recalled around 10% in rating NASCAR experienced in the same time last season. Some attributed this drop to Chase Elliott’s sitting out due to an injury. It’s true to a certain extent as Elliott is the most famous among the fans.

Hamlin, implied that with the ratings momentum NASCAR going to have right now, even if Elliott sat out of couple of races, the rating increase won’t be significantly affected. So the spike in rating, compared to last year, NASCAR potentially going to experience will not be just the product of Elliott’s presence but will also be the reflection of the healthy state it is now in.

I think, generally speaking, we've got some good momentum with the ratings. Now we are starting to get into where you also have to have an asterisk is that we're getting into the non-Chase Elliott races from last year. The rating last year declined 10% on average when Chase was not in the race, so we should see a bump regardless of that. Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental podcast.

Denny Hamlin endorses Chase Elliott’s views on horsepower debate

The horsepower has been a major talking point in the NASCAR garage since the start of the Next-Gen era. Drivers has been asking NASCAR to increase the HP limit so that they can pass more on the track with less traffic. 2020 Cup Chase Elliott, who has experience in building engines due to his families ties in racing, gave his take on the issue.

He pointed out ahead of the Food City 500 that the current regulation are making the builders to make engines less efficient and less durable.  He urged for a update in the regulations which will help the sport in solving the issue. Hamlin has endorsed the words by Elliott by resharing the interview on X.

Well, this interview which I thought was the most informative of why we want "fall off" certainly holds true today after what we saw yesterday. Take a listen. Hamlin wrote on X.

Hamlin has been a long advocate on increasing the horsepower. After the race at Bristol It has been proven that the combination of tier wear and an increase in horsepower can make racing better on the short-tracks. Now it’s up to NASCAR to make the final call, with keeping driver’ opinions in mind.
