Joey Logano admits he ‘hates’ the way the junior racing series organizers introduce his six-year-old son as it denies him a normal racing experience
NADIA ZOMORODIAN/NEWS-JOURNAL / USA TODAY NETWORK

Two-time NASCAR Cup champion Joey Logano is one of the most gifted drivers of his generation. He came into the sport as a teenager or ‘sliced bread’ and quickly established himself as a driver to look up to. The racing community now looks up to the team Penske Racing driver as one of the sport’s leaders.

Logano is a family man with three children with his wife, Brittany. His oldest son, Hudson, who is six, is already showing signs of wanting to become a racer. The Ford driver is more than delighted to see his son having a deep passion for racing, but at the same time, he is cautious about becoming a professional racer.

Joey Logano has a solid understanding of the possibility of his son growing up with goals of matching his dad’s championship-winning career. While Hudson can do so, history shows that more than 90% of second-generation drivers don’t enjoy the same success as their parents, and some struggle to cope with the failure.

The ex-JGR driver doesn’t want the same for his son and is focused on giving Hudson a normal racing experience growing up. But when he goes to Quarter-Midget races with his son, Hudson is often introduced as Logano’s son, and the NASCAR champion hates that as he believes this description deprives his son of a normal racing experience.

If the kids want to race and share the love of cars, that’s great. But I don’t want him to think he has to reach a certain level because his dad did. I don’t want him to have that pressure. At the couple of races he’s run, they’ve introduced him as ‘Joey Logano’s son, Hudson.’ I hate that. He’s coming in like every other kid. When we go to race, we throw stuff in the back of the pickup and he takes his dirty helmet. I want him to be as normal as possible. Logano said, as reported by Autoweek.

Joey Logano’s rivals Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick also have sons racing in junior divisions

While Logano is looking for a normal racing experience for his son, his fellow Cup champions Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick are taking a different path. Both have sons older than Hudson, actively involved in junior racing.

Kyle Busch’s son Brexton is active in the junior racing series despite being just eight years old. He has already amassed a fan following, and Busch hasn’t been shy of using his brand on Brixton’s car—his son even has a development contract with RCR. But at the end of the day, Busch comes to his son’s racing ventures as a normal racing dad.

In the case of 2014 Cup champion Kevin Harvick’s son Keelan, who is 11 years old, has already started driving full-body stock cars. Harvick is deeply invested in his son’s career, and since he has reached an important phase of his junior career, he is slowly building a brand around him.
