Christopher Bell and Will Byron are one of the most talented drivers in the Cup Series. The two have a real shot at this year’s championship. While both Bell and Byron have impressed the field on numerous occasions, they have failed to make it big when it mattered. Now, NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick has detailed the reason for the duo’s failure to clinch a title.
At last weekend’s race in Sonoma, Christopher Bell managed to get an impressive fifth place in the Cup race. On the other hand, William Byron got some crucial points with an eighth place finish. While such a points haul is important in the championship, the two were never in the fray for race victory.
The two drivers have built a reputation of failed title bids. While in 2023, Byron managed to win six races, his results dipped in the middle of the season, something he never recovered from. Bell had a great start to this season, with three wins in a row. However, the JGR star has fallen behind his rivals on-track by now.
Kevin Harvick pointed out that both the drivers pull off strong starts every single year. Unfortunately, things are no longer the same come mid-season. Christopher Bell and William Byron fall behind after a quick start, with an unpredictable end to the campaign according to Harvick. The NASCAR legend made it clear that Bell and Byron needed to change. The former Cup Series champion asserted that drivers need to be consistent rather than a catastrophe in the championship, certainly a clever play of words.
I believe that Christopher Bell and William Byron, they go through this same streak every year of starting off strong, off in the middle, and then you never know what’s going to show up at the end of the year. If you’re gonna win these championships, you’ve got to be able to find that consistency of when you have an off day, not be a catastrophe.
Kevin Harvick said on Happy Hour podcast
Christopher Bell and William Byron might be facing their age-old problem of consistency, but there is one driver making ways in NASCAR, Shane van Gisbergen. The former V8 Supercars champion is competing in his first full Cup season this year. So far, Gisbergen has shocked critics, with a total of three wins, including the inaugural Cup race in Mexico. Thus, the Kiwi driver has already secured a spot in the Playoffs.
Kevin Harvick pointed out that unlike someone like Christopher Bell or Denny Hamlin, Shane van Gisbergen had mastered racing at road courses. This is what made the difference between the Kiwi driver and the rest of the field. Harvick predicted that Gisbergen was set to have an incredible Cup season if he manages to win another race by the end of the year.
So let me ask you this. He’s won three races. Bell, Denny Hamlin, Larson won three races. So, if you take the types of tracks off and just—they haven’t won on a road course—so what’s the difference? Let’s just say it ends right here. I think he wins one of the two road courses that we have left. So let’s just say he ends the season with 4 wins and 5 poles, and the season’s over. That’s a pretty successful Cup season, for anybody.
Kevin Harvick stated.
Certainly, the entire NASCAR field is closely-packed as always. Drivers like Christopher Bell have met their match in the form of Shane van Gisbergen. At the end of the day, fans are the real winners, no matter who emerges in front on-track, the viewers are assured of some thrilling action every single race.
