Hendrick Motorsports is one of the biggest teams in the Cup Series. HMS is an iconic name, carrying a huge legacy. Currently, the team has stars like Chase Elliot and Kyle Larson. However, NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick believes that there’s one key flaw within this team.
Last weekend’s race at Dover was not the worst of rounds for Hendrick Motorsports. The team bagged two Top 5 finishes courtesy of Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson. Chase Elliot was not far behind the duo in sixth place. Though, William Byron had a poor outing as he failed to finish the race. Nevertheless, HMS bagged some crucial points.
According to Harvick, the Cup Series race was more of a battle between Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports. However, it was the Toyota-backed team that emerged victorious with Denny Hamlin taking the race win.
Yet, the Dover performance did not satisfy Kevin Harvick. The former Cup Series champion had hoped for better results from the HMS line-up at Dover. The 49-year-old was disappointed to see Kyle Larson’s early struggles that ruined his chances of victory.
Harvick declared that HMS needs to get the house back in order in the last five races before the start of the Playoffs. The NASCAR legend was simply fed up with the inconsistent results from the iconic team.
I had to just had the feeling that they were going to run better this weekend… (Larson) was slower to get up through the pack than I thought he would be. Once he finally got up there, he was in the mix…They definitely needed to get back on track and be able to try to get themselves in a position to get the ship right. You’ve got five more races to do that before the playoff start. Man, I hate that inconsistency.
Kevin Harvick said on Happy Hour podcast.
While Harvick’s comments do point out inconsistency at HMS, the team is not doing that badly in the standings. Elliot, Byron and Larson round up the top 3 spots, showing that HMS is still the dominant force. Though, Denny Hamlin in the JGR Toyota is not far behind, and has more victories than any Hendrick driver.
Kevin Harvick reckoned that Chase Elliot was the best when it came to damage limitation. The 29-year-old would quickly shift focus on salvaging the best result possible even in difficult situations.
On the other hand, William Byron and Kyle Larson would simply lose all pace once things started to go wrong. Harvick claimed that Byron was once again repeating the mistakes he made last year as he falls behind after a decent start to the campaign.
I think that’s the thing that the No. 9 (Elliott) does better than those other three cars is, even when they’re off, they’re figuring out how to finish sixth, seventh, eighth. When the No. 24 (Byron) and the No. 5 (Larson) are off, it tanks. The No. 24 situation is the exact same as it was last year and the year before. They starts off with a win, go through the summer slump, and then show back up at the end of the year.
Kevin Harvick explained
Despite having a successful run so far, Hendrick Motorsports does have its fair share of problems. The team has a handful of rounds left before the business end of the season begins with the Playoffs. This gives HMS and its drivers the chance to sort out any underlying problems before every race begins to count.
