Kevin Harvick Weighs In On Throwback Weekend Debate
Stephanie Amador / USA TODAY NETWORK

Kevin Harvick has shared his thoughts on NASCAR drivers who think Throwback Weekend has lost its luster.

In his weekly Happy Hour podcast, he was asked his opinion on the topic. The 2014 Cup Series champion said he thinks the weekend plays an important role in educating young drivers on the sport's storied past.

“Maybe some of the drivers don’t have a great understanding of what the history of the sport looks like," Harvick said. "It should be part of what they do in trying to understand more of our sport because it makes them appreciate the things that they have more.”

The Fox analyst went on to argue that more drivers should participate in running throwback schemes to increase excitement around the weekend.

“You can’t make it mandatory, but I would put a little more emphasis on it being preferred to come to the race track and be a part of the weekend,” he said.

He also shared his experience having Richard and Kyle Petty in the booth over the weekend, saying throwback weekend is a great way to get some of the sport’s legends involved and at the track.

“When you look at the age that a lot of those guys are at, we need to make sure that we put some emphasis on keeping those guys involved and around,” he said.

The comments come after Throwback Weekend became a hot topic of conversation last weekend at Darlington. Several drivers, including NASCAR’s most popular driver Chase Elliott, were harsh critics of the nod to the past.

“I thought it lost it about four or five years ago,” Elliott admitted. “So, like, at some point I think we got to chill on it a little bit. I think we've rode the horse to death and we tend to do that a little bit too much.”
