CONCORD, N.C. — EasySportz has learned through industry chatter and paddock conversations that there is growing belief Spire Motorsports Cup Series driver Michael McDowell could be trending toward retirement at the conclusion of the 2026 season, potentially opening the No. 71 chartered entry for the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series campaign.

While nothing is official at this time, multiple sources around the garage indicate discussions around McDowell’s long-term future have begun to surface internally, with the 2021 Daytona 500 winner weighing what could be the final chapter of his full-time Cup career.

If McDowell does step away, attention immediately shifts to one of the more intriguing open seats expected to hit the market in the next cycle, with Spire’s continued organizational growth making the No. 71 a more attractive landing spot than in years past.

Early names emerging for No. 71 ride

Based on current industry momentum, two names are beginning to surface as early frontrunners in hypothetical discussions: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kyle Busch.

Stenhouse, currently with Hyak Motorsports’ No. 47 program, is viewed as a strong superspeedway performer with proven Cup Series wins and experience in high-pressure drafting environments — a natural fit for Spire’s recent strength on restrictor-plate style tracks.

However, Hyak is rumored to fold at season’s end.

Busch, meanwhile, remains one of the most accomplished drivers of his era, and his future continues to be a consistent talking point throughout the garage as teams monitor potential long-term changes across top-tier Cup organizations.

Busch domino effect scenarios

Should Busch become available in any capacity, industry speculation suggests multiple possible landing spots or roles could emerge, including a potential bridge opportunity at Hendrick Motorsports in a mentorship or transitional capacity for rising talent Corey Day, a move to Spire Motorsports in a full Cup role, a reduced schedule split between Cup and Trucks, or even a gradual step back from full-time competition depending on how future discussions unfold.

At this time, none of these scenarios are confirmed, and teams involved typically do not comment on driver market speculation this far ahead of the 2027 season.

Still, with veteran seats tightening and charter value increasing across the Cup Series, the situation surrounding Spire’s No. 71 is expected to become one of the more closely watched storylines as the 2026 season progresses.

As always, in NASCAR’s ever-active “silly season,” early whispers often become the foundation for the first real dominoes to fall.

If we had to bet, we expect Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to fill the No. 71 next season. But if it isn’t Stenhouse or Busch, it may get frisky.
