Kyle Larson put forth a decent performance at the FireKeepers Casino 400 run around the Michigan Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports star started the race in fifth and managed to maintain his position as he finished in the same order.

Larson faced multiple problems throughout the race and was also hit with a speeding penalty during the second restart. However, despite achieving a seemingly positive finish, the No.5 driver lambasts his performance in Michigan after finishing in P5.

Team Hendrick put forth a great strategic and fuel plan, which allowed Kyle Larson to defend his position and ultimately finish in P5. This result in Michigan has helped Larson amass his ninth Top-5 finish out of the total 15 races run this year. Now, during a post-race interview, the Hendrick star opens up on his performance and roasts himself despite achieving a commendable result in Michigan.

Kyle Larson was questioned regarding his thoughts on his impressive performance. The Michigan Speedway remained completely sunny throughout the race, with some patches of cloudy overcast on the track. As such, Larson believed that his performance during the shady part of the race was decent as compared to his normal race pace during sunny weather.

Larson reckoned that he was the best when the shade was present. Regardless, he accepted that he remained ‘junk’ the entire day as he was unable to move ahead of the P5 spot.

The No.5 driver acknowledged that Hendrick and he weren’t very good despite making the best out of their results. Hence, the 32-year-old was overall satisfied with his results at the FireKeepers Casino 400 in Michigan.

I mean, I was best when the shade was out, but I was junk all day. So it didn’t matter. We were not very good, but we made the most out of it. So I’m proud of that.

Kyle Larson reckons he would have finished P5 regardless of fuel saving

Hendrick Motorsport’s fuel-saving strategy helped Kyle Larson fight after receiving the time penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Still, Kyle Larson wasn’t completely impressed by this call, as it did not help him much in terms of race pace.

Hence, the 32-year-old shared his candid opinion on his results even after the team’s efforts on a better fuel strategy.

Larson applauded the team’s decision on fuel saving and helping him fight on the track. However, the No.5 driver acknowledged that even if he pushed all the way, he wouldn’t have been able to improve his P5 finish.

As such, the results would’ve been worse if it weren’t for the fuel strategy. The 27-year-old concluded by labeling the entire race as a ‘tough day’ in the office, as he hopes for better results in the coming races.

I mean, a little bit of saving fuel, but even if I was pushing, I would have finished fifth. So probably worse without a rain out of fuel. But, yeah, just a tough day, but, you know, good finish.

Kyle Larson still has a long way to go to return to his winning pace in NASCAR. The No.5 driver is still giving it his all to achieve the best possible results. Larson will now get into preparations for the NASCAR Cup at Mexico City as the team aims to stick to better strategies. The 27-year-old will also aim to improve his position in the drivers’ championship as he is just 41 points off the top.
