Hendrick Motorsports might be off to a hot start this season, but NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon isn't satisfied just yet.
Gordon, the vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, made it clear that he's awfully impressed with the way Alex Bowman has performed this season. He already has five top-10 finishes this year, including a second-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway this past Sunday.
"Drive the car the best you can. Prep the best you can. Mentally, physically just be in a position to go capitalize when the day goes well," Gordon said in regards to Bowman's performance in the Straight Talk Wireless 400. "I think that is really what I'm seeing this year in them, but also what you saw today."
Chase Elliott, on the other hand, had a disappointing result in Miami this past weekend. He finished in 18th place, dropping himself to sixth in the Cup Series standings.
Gordon offered words of encouragement to Elliott, who is trying to measure up against one of the best drivers in the world in Kyle Larson.
"Again, it’s a high standard at Hendrick and what everybody brings, like the #5 team did today," Gordon said, via Essentially Sports. "A lot of times, you’re really measuring yourself against the best out there, and a lot of times, that’s right in your own stable. If you’re not achieving what you want to achieve, you know you’ve got to go to work, and you know you’re not meeting expectations."
Hendrick Motorsports should feel good about Elliott having such high standards. After all, we're talking about a driver who won a Cup Series championship in his early 20s.
That being said, Elliott only has one win in the past two years. His slump is too notable to ignore.
The Cup Series will resume this Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. We'll see if Elliott picks up his first win since last April.
