NASCAR Monday Mash-Up: A wild night in Atlanta

First week of NASCAR on TNT and Atlanta delivered. What a wild ride this weekend, plus action from Lime Rock Park. The racing at EchoPark Speedway was a bit better than Lime Rock, but it was a full weekend of racing packaged up into just two days.

The Xfinity Series owned Friday night on The CW. Then stock car racing fans were given a tripleheader on Saturday. Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series, and Cup Series action back-to-back-to-back! FOX to FS2 to TNT. It was hours of racing.

Let’s get into the NASCAR weekend from Atlanta and Lime RockPark. Then, we can turn our eyes toward Chicago and the street race this week.

Mother Nature shows up early at Atlanta

It wouldn’t be a NASCAR weekend without some weather issues. Lightning was trolling NASCAR all day on Friday.

Qualifying for the Xfinity and Cup Series had to be altered to just a single round. Then, the Xfinity Series race was delayed over an hour at one point due to lightning in the area.

Connor Zilisch crashes CW broadcast during NASCAR delay

During the lenghty weather delay, Connor Zilisch decided he was bored. So, he walked to the media center and put himself on The CW broadcast.

Zilisch and his best pal, Jesse Love, went back and froth with one another on camera. But it was the JR Motorsports driver who got the last laugh when his win at Pocono was brought up.

Jesse Love triggers the ‘big one’ in Xfinity Series race

Unfortunately for Jesse Love, the laughs didn’t last very long. He went spinning in front of the field when the race went back to green after the delay. It caused extensive damage to cars from the front to the back.

Love rallied back with a damaged car. He finished P6. His buddy, Zilisch, was P4.

Nick Sanchez earns first-career NASCAR Xfinity win

The track at Atlanta was a tough one for many Xfinity Series drivers. There were spins on the track, multicar wrecks, and other issues for drivers. Then they had to deal with racing against each other the entire time, many with damaged cars.

While he wasn’t the most dominant car on the track, Nick Sanchez put himself in the perfect place at the end of the race. With a big move to take the lead from Aric Almirola, Sanchez held on for his first career win.

Austin Hill confronts Daniel Dye after Atlanta race

Apparently, Daniel Dye flipped off Austin Hill during the Xfinity Series race. The RCR driver did not appreciate that.

Hill stopped his NASCAR rival after the race. The two shared words and Hill was very explicit in his messaging. “Flip me off again motherf***er,” he warned Dye before walking off.

Corey Heim dominates Truck Series at Lime Rock Park

Over on the Truck Series side of things, Corey Heim was dominant and no one could come close to him. Even when drivers were wiping each other out on restarts, Heim was too far out in front to be bothered.

IMSA star Jordan Taylor was in this race. Heim didn’t even have to battle him for a moment on Saturday afternoon. Started on pole, led every lap (even if the official scoring monitor says he didn’t) and put up his fifth win of the season.

Thomas Annunziata becomes first-time winner in ARCA

Following up the Truck Series, the chaos of the ARCA Menards Series made for a more exciting race. Lime Rock is a beautiful venue, but the narrowness of the track makes it difficult to pass.

Through all of the chaos, and even with an early spin, Thomas Annunziata won his first-career ARCA win. The 20-year-old is one to watch among the developing prospects.

23-car wreck upsets every NASCAR bracket in America

Back to Atlanta for Cup Series action, there was yet another weather delay. When the Cup Series started racing again in Stage 2 of the race, that is when things fell apart.

23 cars were invovled in the same incident as Denny Hamlin spun out in front of the field. It completely busted likely every bracket in the NASCAR In-Season Tournament Challenge.

Chase Briscoe team told to stop making repairs

One of the cars involved in that wreck was Chase Briscoe. After 30 minutes of repairs to his car, the 19 team was told to stop working. They wouldn’t be allowed to return to the track anyway.

NASCAR officials felt the chassis was too damaged to continue racing. Briscoe was clearly frustrated by the whole ordeal.

Chase Elliott wins with last-lap pass, breaks 44-race streak

After 44 races without a win, Chase Elliott got it done at Atlanta. Elliott was a bit overwhelmed by the whole situation. He won for the first time this season, in front of his home crowd, with a special scheme, for his 20th career win – it all added up.

We will have to wait and see if the momentum is real. But this 9 team has had wicked speed the last three weeks of the season. Could Elliott be back to being a contender for the NASCAR championship?
