The Track: Phoenix Raceway

Phoenix Raceway is a 1-mile racetrack in Avondale, Arizona. Opened in 1964, it was designed originally for IndyCar but was reconfigured in 2011. The racetrack is considered a dogleg oval, with turn four having a quick bend heading into turn one. The Xfinity Series has been racing at Phoenix since 1999, with Jeff Gordon winning the first race. Kyle Busch holds the win record with 11 wins at the track in the Xfinity Series.

Drivers To Watch:

In this race, we have two Cup veterans in the field. Alex Bowman is racing the #17 for Hendrick Motorsports and Aric Almirola in the #19 for Joe Gibbs Racing. Bowman is from Phoenix and made waves here in 2016. Subbing for an injured Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bowman won the pole and led 194 laps. Almirola has an average finish at Phoenix in his Cup career of 15th.

As mentioned, Chevrolet has not won at this track since 2022 with Noah Gragson. Ford and Toyota have been dominant here, with Chandler Smith winning in the spring for Toyota, and Riley Herbst winning for Ford last year. But in 2025, through the first three races, only Chevys have won. With Chevrolet, Justin Allgaier is the strongest candidate for a win. Last fall, he won the championship by running second to Herbst. He has 2 wins and 11 top fives at Phoenix.

For Ford and Toyota, it is a toss-up. Racing the #54 Toyota for JGR, Taylor Gray has impressive stats at Phoenix. A win in ARCA and a top-ten in the Truck Series. He has the equipment, driving the car that Ty Gibbs won a championship here with. With Ford, I think the Haas Factory Team could go back to back. Whether Sheldon Creed could get that elusive first win or Sam Mayer gets his eighth, Haas seems to have not missed a step since they shut down as Stewart Haas.
