NASCAR Xfinity Series Texas Motor Speedway Preview

The Xfinity Series heads from the high banks of Daytona to the banks of Texas Motor Speedway and the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300. Here is everything you need to know for race day.

NASCAR Xfinity Series Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Preview

Last time at Texas Motor Speedway for the Xfinity Series was one for the record books. We saw an amazing finish between Sam Mayer and Ryan Sieg with a margin of victory of just .002 seconds, the second closest in series history. It saw Mayer take the win and 100,000 dollars in the Dash 4 Cash.

While I don’t think we will see such an exciting finish this year, we are still getting ready for a great race in the Lone Star State.

Race Preview:

The Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, the twelfth race of 2025, is a 300-mile, 200-lap race around the 1.5-mile track. Stage cautions will be on laps 45 and 90, with the checkered flag on lap 200. A total prize purse of 1,651,939 dollars is up for grabs. The cars will be racing on the same tires used previously at Las Vegas.

The Track: Texas Motor Speedway

With construction beginning in 1995 and opening in 1996, the Texas Motor Speedway was constructed by Speedway Motorsports, which owns many tracks across the United States. It was originally constructed with 24 degrees of banking in turns 1-4, but in 2017, turns 1-2 were taken down to 20 degrees. The front and back straights have five degrees of banking. The 2017 repave also saw the track widen.

The first Xfinity Series race was held in 1997, with Mark Martin winning that race. Kyle Busch holds the Xfinity Series wins record at 10 wins. John Hunter Nemechek has the most among active drivers with two. Ryan Blaney holds the lap record, set in 2018, with a 0:28.342-second lap.

Xfinity Series Points Standings:

Here are the Xfinity Series points following Talladega:

1. Justin Allgaier: 449
2. Austin Hill: 370
3. Sam Mayer: 347
4. Jesse Love: 340
5. Carson Kvapil*: 306
6. Connor Zilisch*: 299
7. Brandon Jones: 293
8. Sammy Smith: 293
9. Jeb Burton: 291
10. Sheldon Creed: 290

Drivers To Watch:

Unfortunately, due to a lower back injury from his crash at Talladega, Connor Zilisch is out for this race. Kyle Larson will be substituting for the rookie. Zilisch has been granted a playoff waiver from NASCAR.

We have some additions to the field for this race at Texas Motor Speedway. Riley Herbst will race the #19 Supra for Joe Gibbs Racing. Katherine Legge continues her part-time schedule, driving the #32 for Jordan Anderson Racing. Corey Day continues his development starts, again driving the #17 for Hendrick Motorsports.

We saw Sam Mayer win this race by a nose last year. I think he can do it again in Fort Worth. He finished fifth at Las Vegas, a similar track, and running the same tire. I think Mayer can break through and get that first win for Haas-Factory Team at any race now.

Joe Gibbs Racing has won four of the last seven races at Texas Motor Speedway. Riley Herbst in their all-star car this weekend. Herbst last raced the Xfinity car at Circuit Of The Americas in March. Herbst qualified fifth in the last race at Texas, but did not have the finish that the starting spot deserved. The all-star car has a pole award and a win this season so far. Taylor Gray started third and finished eleventh, the second-highest finish for Toyota in the 2024 race. I think Herbst and Gray are two favorites for Toyota.

Like Kyle Larson said in his presser following his Bristol wins, he wants to embarrass the Xfinity Series field. While his entry is under unfortunate circumstances, he is getting into a very fast race car. If Larson is in the field, look for him to be upfront.

Kevin Harvick Brands Connor Zilisch 'Bullet-Tough' After Freak WGI Victory Lane Accident

Trackhouse Racing star Connor Zilisch‘s weekend at Watkins Glen was bitter sweet. The 19-year-old dominated the Xfinity Series race on Saturday. However, he got injured after he shockingly fell on the ground while getting out of the car. Now, NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick has insisted that the incident will only make the rising star stronger. Zilisch was getting out of his Chevrolet in Victory Lane when he fell on his back. The Trackhouse Racing star collapsed and was taken to the medical center straightaway. Connor Zilisch later revealed that he was okay, but he had broken his collarbone due to the incident. This in turn forced him to miss the Cup race for Trackhouse the following day. Kevin Harvick asserted that the 19-year-old was going to become completely bullet-tough in NASCAR. He pointed out that just in one day he had suffered from so much, be it the high of winning the race, or hitting the rock bottom with an embarrassing injury. Harvick made it clear that Connor Zilisch was a born winner and will continue to achieve a lot more success in the field over the years. This kid is going to be bullet-tough when he is done with all the things that he’s had to deal with, whether it’s his back, falling in Victory Lane, and just learning on the fly and having bunch of success. This kid’s a stud. He’s a winner and he’s going to continue to win. Kevin Harvick said on Happy Hour podcast. Kevin Harvick expresses concerns over Connor Zilisch Kevin Harvick is not someone who will just sit back and watch things happen. The NASCAR veteran has years of experience that makes him understand what might be good for a driver like Connor Zilisch particularly in such situations. Harvick revealed that he went to Zilisch’s father soon after the incident. The former Cup Series champion made it clear that the family must make sure the 19-year-old is taking care of himself and healing. Kevin Harvick further said that once Connor Zilisch gets into a Cup car, he could be unstoppable, albeit he first needs to recover. He made it clear that nothing will work out for the Trackhouse Racing star if he doesn’t recover to 100% before making it back to the field. You got to make sure they take care of him first and not get in a hurry. Make sure he heals correctly, because he’s going to be a winner when he comes and gets into that Cup car. The most important thing is to not rush it because you’re chasing a regular-season Points Championship or an Xfinity Championship. Just make sure that he’s 100 percent.’ Kevin Harvick explained. The NASCAR legend doubled down on the need for proper recovery for the 19-year-old. Kevin Harvick admitted that this was now his main concern for Zilisch. As the Trackhouse Racing star must be willing to take his time to get back into shape. My main concern for Connor at this point is to make sure Connor is 100 percent, because he can take his time in making sure it’s right is my only thing. Kevin Harvick added. Connor Zilisch has had an outstanding campaign this year with six Xfinity wins. However, this incident has put brakes on his run for the time being. It is unclear when the Trackhouse Racing star will return to the field. However, considering the words from Kevin Harvick, it would be better if Zilisch misses a couple of races to be fully fit to get back into the cockpit soon.

Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely

Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, Calif., in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite

Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes may continue to be one of the top contenders for the National League Cy Young Award, but there is one place where he has appeared mortal this season. On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers did to Skenes what they have done to plenty of MLB pitchers in 2025 ... put up big offensive numbers. For the second time this season (Skenes also pitched in Milwaukee on June 25), the Brewers forced him from the game after just 4.0 innings on Tuesday night, logging six hits and four runs during his time on the mound. Both of those performances came at Milwaukee's home stadium (American Family Field) and both are now Skenes' shortest outings of the season. While another NL Central team has put up more runs against Skenes this season (the St. Louis Cardinals nicked him for five runs in 6.0 innings on April 8), no other team has had the same kind of success over multiple starts by Skenes in 2025 as have the Brewers inside their home stadium. In all this season, Skenes has given up 10 hits and eight runs in 8.0 innings in Milwaukee. It was his third career outing on the road against the Brewers, with his lone 2024 start representing arguably the best outing of his rookie season. On July 11, 2024, Skenes struck out 11 and didn't allow a hit over 7.0 innings as the Pirates would eventually post a 1-0 victory. Tuesday's short outing was highlighted by a pair of Milwaukee home runs, including a leadoff solo shot by Sal Frelick that quickly set the tone for the Brewers. While Milwaukee's hit parade helped raise Skenes' ERA on the season to 2.13, it's hardly any reason for concern in a season where the 23-year-old right-hander is still a heavy favorite (-600) to win the NL Cy Young Award, per BetMGM. Skenes struggling in Milwaukee is likely more yet another stamp of approval on the Brewers' potential to be a threat once the postseason arrives. With an 18-4 record since the All-Star break entering Tuesday, Milwaukee has taken over the NL Central race from the Chicago Cubs. So what's the good news for Skenes? This is Pittsburgh's last trip to Milwaukee this season and the next-to-last series for the Pirates against the red-hot Brewers. Milwaukee will visit PNC Park for a three-game series on Sept. 5-7, and if Skenes gets a chance for revenge against Milwaukee, there couldn't be a better place for him to take the mound. This season, in 11 starts covering 68.2 innings, Skenes has a 1.70 ERA in the Steel City.
