Ty Gibbs reacts to pit road controversy, confrontation with No. 6 team at Sonoma: ‘That’s the consequence you pay’

Despite criticism in the moment, Ty Gibbs didn’t really do anything wrong when he entered his pit box and caused a fight on pit road. The crew members for Gibbs and Brad Keselowski got into a fight with each other. NASCAR determined that the 54 did nothing wrong.

Ty Gibbs pulled in pretty tight into his pit box. That resulted in him making slight contact with the tire changer for Brad Keselowski, who was already over the wall with two tires in hand.

After the race, Gibbs was asked about the pit stop. He was a little bit…smug with his answer. He finished it off with a smirk.

“Yeah, you know, by NASCAR’s rules, I’m the lead car because I’m the pit box pass where the 6 is, and I’m in front of him as well,” Gibbs said. “We have these orange lines right there as you can see. … Where if I’m behind him, I have to go around those orange lines for it to be a rule, and going in, I have the right of way.

“So, you know, they’re on the wall for a reason, they jump for a reason, they kind of get out of the way. And those guys like to push it, and that’s kind of the consequence you pay. So, that’s unfortunate for them that they had a penalty. Nothing malicious, it’s my right of way. So.”

Well, Ty Gibbs knows the rules. Maybe he knows the rules too well. He knew he was fine with the move he made, but it was a really close call. We saw what happens when tires go flying when JP Kealey was hit by a tire on pit road a few weeks ago.

Video shows close-call with Ty Gibbs, Brad Keselowski pit crew

Everyone wanted to know what caused the fight between the pit crews of Ty Gibbs and Brad Keselowski, and RFK Racing has delivered. The NASCAR team posted video from the No. 6 team’s pit box, and it shows a pretty clear story.

Gibbs came down to his pit box and appeared to swerve at the tire carrier for Brad Keselowski. Afterwards, the tire carrier went to Gibbs’ pit box, and that’s where the fight broke out.

The timeline of events was strange. Chris Buescher got into Ty Gibbs. Then, Gibbs took his frustration out on Brad Keselowski’s pit box, or it seemed that way. So, we end up with a fight on pit road between the crew members.

Today was a frustrating race for Gibbs. He had speed but never caught the break he needed to truly race for the lead. This race was all about Shane van Gisbergen today. However, we had a lot of action behind SVG throughout the race.
