The Chicago Street Race is one of the most exciting races on the NASCAR calendar. Fans get to see their favorite drivers battle it out in a tricky street race, a far cry from superspeedways like Daytona. However, these tracks have their own risks, as Cody Ware found out. The 29-year-old was out of the race after a massive wreck.

During the street race on Sunday, Ware was fighting for position. However, an issue with his front right started affecting his run. Things went to such an extent that Cody Ware became nothing more than a sitting duck inside his car.

The 29-year-old slammed his car into the wall and a tire came right up on his hood. The incident shocked fans as Ware had no control left over the car. It turned out that the brake rotator in the car broke. As such, Cody Ware could not avoid the wreck. The conditions on-track got worse after the incident.

While Cody Ware was stuck in the barriers, the officials failed to raise a caution immediately. Rather, racing continued for over 30 seconds before a caution was raised. This could’ve been led to another major incident on-track. Luckily everyone managed to avoid any further trouble. The caution was raised after Shane van Gisbergen took the white flag in the lead, going on to win the race.

Cody Ware gets out unharmed from Chicago wreck

The 29-year-old had a massive impact with the barriers. This can undoubtedly take a toll on a driver physically as well as mentally. Cody Ware managed to get out of the car soon after the wreck. After the race, the RWR driver talked to the media.

Ware admitted that the intensity of the crash caught him off-guard. The 29-year-old confessed that he was nothing more than a passenger once the brake rotator failed. At that point, Cody Ware tried his level best to ensure that he could get out of the car safely.

Yeah, I mean especially given the speed of how fast we were going into the barrier, (I was surprised). Obviously I’m not going anywhere, there’s not much I can do at that point. But obviously at that point I’m just focused on getting out of the car and getting to a safe spot.

Cody Ware told Frontstretch

Certainly, the massive wreck shows that drivers are always just one error or issue away from a serious safety hazard. Thankfully, Cody Ware was unharmed. However, the incident has exposed a major shortcoming when it comes to cautions. NASCAR will need to ensure that such a similar thing is not repeated in the future, with cautions coming out as soon as possible.
