Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 NBA playoffs are underway as we already have the Boston Celtics representing one-half of the Eastern Conference Finals matchup. Some key players this season have already been bounced in the postseason, or before it, including LeBron James, Donovan Mitchell, and Paul George among others.

Trade and free agency rumors continue to swirl around some of the league’s best stars but that doesn’t mean all of them will leave their current teams. In fact, 10 NBA stars will most likely stay with their teams this summer and for the foreseeable future.

1. LeBron James

2023-24 Season Statistics: 25.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 8.3 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.5 BPG

LeBron James appears to want to maintain his loyalty to the Los Angeles Lakers for the foreseeable future. With a likely playing tenure of two to three more seasons, James seems inclined to solidify his connection with the Lakers. The Lakers' expressed interest in potentially drafting Bronny James, suggests that the franchise wants to anchor LeBron to Los Angeles until his retirement.

Not to mention, James has established roots in LA, evidenced by his residence in the city and the fact his lifestyle will be difficult to replicate anywhere else. The opportunity to team up with Anthony Davis, one of the league's premier talents, further cements the Lakers as an attractive destination for James.

While rumors of a potential return to Cleveland have circulated after The King was spotted courtside in the Cavaliers postseason matchup against the Celtics this week, it seems improbable that James would reunite with Dan Gilbert after having burned bridges before.

2. Pascal Siakam

2023-24 Season Statistics: 21.7 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 4.3 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Pascal Siakam, the dynamic forward, has emerged as a crucial piece for the Indiana Pacers, forming a compelling partnership with Tyrese Haliburton. Their synergy on the court, particularly in transition and as facilitators, has contributed to the Pacers boasting the NBA's top-ranked offense in the regular season and also their matchup with the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs.

Siakam's impending free agency presents an opportunity for the Pacers to solidify their roster and further bolster their standing in the Eastern Conference. With the potential to offer Siakam a max contract and the promise of a pivotal role in the team's ascent, Indiana presents an enticing proposition for the talented forward. Should Siakam opt to re-sign with the Pacers, the team's trajectory seems poised for continued success, with Siakam serving as a cornerstone in their pursuit of competitiveness in the East.

3. Trae Young

2023-24 Season Statistics: 25.7 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 10.8 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Despite being the subject of trade speculation throughout the season, Trae Young's future with the Atlanta Hawks could be secure, especially following the team's acquisition of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 Draft. This could make Young untouchable in trade discussions, as the Hawks would be hesitant to part ways with a player of his caliber and impact.

Young's ability to consistently produce double-doubles and his status as an offensive juggernaut make him indispensable to the team's success. Not to mention, the potential addition of Alexandre Sarr, a promising French prospect, could further elevate the Hawks' offensive potency, with Young orchestrating plays and forming dynamic connections, such as alley-oops, with Sarr.

Additionally, the presence of players like Dejounte Murray in crucial roles adds depth and versatility to the team's lineup and the Hawks might not want to take a gamble and trade their 25-year-old All-Star as a result.

4. Zion Williamson

2023-24 Season Statistics: 22.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.7 BPG

Brandon Ingram's future with the New Orleans Pelicans appears uncertain amidst swirling trade rumors, particularly regarding his teammate Zion Williamson. While Williamson has been speculated to be on the trading block, the Pelicans may ultimately decide to retain him due to his immense potential and the scarcity of comparable talents available in the market.

Consequently, Ingram, a 23-year-old forward with considerable upside, could become the centerpiece of any potential trade package orchestrated by the Pelicans. By parting ways with Ingram, the Pelicans could acquire valuable assets to complement and support Williamson, with the effort to build a competitive roster around their young star who has yet to reach his true potential.

5. James Harden

2023-24 Season Statistics: 16.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 8.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.8 BPG

James Harden is still one of the premier playmakers in the NBA and has showcased his skills with some impressive performances for the Los Angeles Clippers this season. However, despite his contributions, Harden faces uncertainty regarding his contractual future as he enters free agency after opting into his player option with the 76ers this season.

While the Clippers may be hesitant to offer Harden a long-term deal, particularly considering his age and injury concerns, his retention could become pivotal in the event of Paul George's departure in free agency. With George's exit appearing increasingly likely, the Clippers may prioritize retaining Harden to form a formidable pairing alongside Kawhi Leonard.

To mitigate risk, the Clippers might offer a shorter-term contract, possibly a one or two-year deal, to ensure flexibility and prevent a repeat of past pitfalls, as seen with George's tenure. By securing Harden, the Clippers can bolster their roster and sustain competitiveness in the Western Conference even if Paul George walks.

6. DeMar DeRozan

2023-24 Season Statistics: 24.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.6 BPG

DeMar DeRozan finds himself in an intriguing position with the Chicago Bulls as the team contemplates potential roster changes this offseason. Despite the likelihood of a roster overhaul, indications suggest that the Bulls may opt to retain DeRozan over Zach LaVine.

While DeRozan, at 34 years old, may be older than LaVine, his invaluable leadership qualities and on-court prowess make him a valuable asset for the team. Although the Bulls fell short of the playoffs this year, there exists optimism that parting ways with LaVine to acquire assets, could yield improvements for the team.

By retaining DeRozan, the Bulls signal their commitment to leveraging his experience and leadership to guide the team through a transitional phase while fostering a competitive environment in the East because there are still some talented players around him including Nikola Vucevic, Coby White, and Alex Caruso.

7. Klay Thompson

2023-24 Season Statistics: 17.9 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.3 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Klay Thompson, a highly sought-after free agent this summer, seems poised to continue his tenure with the Golden State Warriors. Both Thompson and the Warriors share a mutual desire to maintain their partnership, underlined by their shared commitment to one another. Thompson's willingness to accept a pay cut reflects his dedication to remaining in San Francisco alongside longtime teammate Stephen Curry.

While Thompson may not command a salary close to the $43 million he earned this year, a potential contract in the range of $20 to $25 million could pave the way for his re-signing with the Warriors until his retirement. This scenario not only solidifies the Warriors' core but also ensures continuity and stability within the franchise, given Thompson's integral role in their past successes.

8. OG Anunoby

2023-24 Season Statistics: 14.7 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.7 BPG

OG Anunoby's impending free agency presents a significant decision point for both him and the New York Knicks. Despite possessing a player option worth nearly $20 million, Anunoby is expected to decline it in favor of pursuing a long-term, max contract. His stellar performances during the playoffs (16.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.1 BPG), where he showcased his prowess on both ends of the court, have elevated his value in the eyes of the Knicks and other suitors across the league.

Anunoby's seamless integration into the Knicks' lineup, particularly alongside Jalen Brunson, has further underscored his importance to the team's success. Despite the Knicks' acquisition of Anunoby via trade, parting ways with key assets like RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, the team remains committed to retaining him for the foreseeable future. While Anunoby may attract interest from multiple teams, the Knicks are poised to prioritize his re-signing.

9. Bradley Beal

2023-24 Season Statistics: 18.2 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.5 BPG

The Phoenix Suns probably need to break up their Big Three but it might not be possible. Devin Booker is untouchable since he is an All-Star at 27 years old, Kevin Durant is a difference-maker on the court when healthy, and Bradley Beal has an untradable contract. For that reason, Beal likely isn’t going anywhere.

The former All-Star is under contract until 2026-27 with over $50 million paid to him each season. Beal appeared in 53 games this season and averaged 18.2 points per game, but his production fell in the postseason as he posted 16.5 points per game on 44.1% shooting from the field. The shooting guard has most likely exited his prime which means the Suns are likely stuck with his contract.

10. D’Angelo Russell

2023-24 Season Statistics: 18.0 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 6.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.5 BPG

D'Angelo Russell's future with the Los Angeles Lakers hangs in the balance as the team navigates potential roster adjustments. While the Lakers may entertain the idea of shopping Russell if a suitable All-Star caliber player becomes available, the likelihood of such a scenario remains uncertain.

With stars like Trae Young (likely to stay in Atlanta) Donovan Mitchell (trade value too high), and the high trade value associated with players like Lauri Markkanen (Jazz want multiple first-round picks) the Lakers may find it challenging to secure a viable trade option.

That means Russell's $18,692,307 player option presents a compelling case for his retention by the Lakers or possibly a long-term deal for the 28-year-old. Given LeBron James' anticipated re-signing to partner with Anthony Davis, the Lakers may face difficulty in finding a player of Russell's caliber on the market. As a result, bringing Russell back into the fold could provide the Lakers with continuity and stability in their backcourt.
