The Houston Rockets made immense strides in the 2023-2024 regular season. Winning 41 out of 82 games, the Rockets’ win total increased by nineteen in just a span of one season. While they failed to notch a play-in spot, they might just be a piece or two away from becoming a top-tier team in the Western Conference. Houston surprisingly snagging the third overall pick for the 2024 NBA draft is the icing on the cake for sign and trade purposes. Here are three early Rockets free agent targets in the 2024 NBA Offseason, including Paul George, OG Anunoby, and Bruce Brown.

Paul George

Houston’s in desperate need of star power to surround their young core. This was one of the main reasons why they couldn’t quite reach play-in contention. With no guarantee of relying on their main core to lead the charge, veteran and nine-time All-Star Paul George could certainly fit this bill.

Right now, he is on the LA Clippers, who just lost in six games against Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s Dallas Mavericks in Round One of the NBA playoffs. This culminated in another unceremonious departure in the PG-Kawhi-led Clippers era.

Throughout George’s tenure in LA, it’s been nothing but hardships, consisting of early playoff disappointment and injuries. This year has been no different, even with two more All-Stars on the roster in James Harden and Russell Westbrook. Additionally, George’s contract following this season is a player option.

With Harden entering unrestricted free agency and Kawhi Leonard’s injury status always up in the air, George could opt out if he believes he could play for another team that is just opening their playoff window. For the Rockets to acquire PG, it won’t be an easy price to pay. George is expected to earn $48.7 million should he opt in his player option or decide to gamble in the free agent market for a max deal in the works.

It’s no secret PG-13 has also made several trips to the injury department, especially wearing a Clippers uniform. Yet, the 33-year-old impressively played in 74 games this season, the first time playing over 70 games since his MVP candidate 2018-2019 season on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Along with his two co-stars, Leonard and Harden, George averaged 22.6 points with 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He shot 47.1% from the field and 41.3% from deep, both career highs.

The Rockets could use someone like George. His play on the court can compliment Ime Udoka’s roster very well, especially with wing defense and shot creation. Plus, George doesn’t necessarily need the ball to do well, and can still defend at an above-average level. If Houston wants more veteran star power, they should take a gamble at acquiring the nine-time All-Star in a sign-and-trade, sending a package surrounding picks and Dillon Brooks in order to save enough of their cap space.

Better yet, Houston just landed the third overall pick, which increases leverage even more. Along with Fred VanVleet, Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and former teammate Steven Adams, the Rockets would surely increase scoring and defensive versatility.

OG Anunoby

Following his trade to the New York Knicks, OG Anunoby had been on fire, filling in the gap that was shot creating, athleticism, and efficiency from beyond the arc.  In 23 games, Anunoby averaged 14.1 points on 48.8% shooting 39.4% from deep and a +15.3 plus-minus. Additionally on defense, the Indiana product guarded the perimeter like a hawk to conclude the season, allowing just a 15% three-point field goal in the last six regular season games.

Aside from Jalen Brunson, Anunoby is the X Factor for the Knicks. This was illustrated perfectly during Round 1 against the Philadelphia 76ers with his defense against MVP Joel Embiid and the first two games of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Indiana Pacers.

When Brunson briefly sat out in the second quarter of Game 2 due to a sore foot, Anunoby came alive, exploding for 28 points in 28 minutes before succumbing to a hamstring injury. He’s been out since and the Knicks haven’t been the same on both ends of the floor. Brunson is the only playmaker and can’t do it all on his own to get his teammates involved. While there’s no timetable for Anunoby’s return, it’s clear how much of an impact he’s made for the Knicks.

If George isn’t available, then targeting Anunoby won’t be a complete downgrade. He fits better on the Rockets on a team-based level and will be a far better selection than Dillon Brooks.

The 26-year-old also has a 2024 player option and could decide to gamble on a max deal as well in the free-agent market. Fortunately, it won’t be as high as George’s number. Ideally, this would be a better fit for Houston given age, financial reliability, and team chemistry.

Bruce Brown

Prior to the 2023-2024 season, the Indiana Pacers signed Bruce Brown away from his former team in the Denver Nuggets to bolster their perimeter defense. Most will recall Brown’s major impact in the 2023 playoffs, becoming a key bench piece in the Nuggets NBA Finals run.

Unfortunately, that same tenacity didn’t bode well in his first season with Indiana. While Brown wasn’t terrible, the Pacers needed more size and scoring versatility to pair alongside Tyrese Haliburton. Thus, Brown was shipped to Toronto in a trade package to acquire forward Pascal Siakam, and now here we are.

Brown’s role in a Raptors uniform isn’t super impactful long-term. The team is still searching for an identity nearly five years removed from their 2019 title run. Retaining the 2023 NBA champion at $23 million for 2024-2025 doesn’t appear to be in their future plans. His contract contains a club option in Year 2. Should the Raptors choose to decline Brown’s club option, the Rockets could be in for a chance to snag one of the better free-agent perimeter and one-on-one defenders in the league at a discounted price.

On the 2022-2023 Nuggets, Brown allowed just 31% from shots beyond the arc under renowned coach Michael Malone. While his defense did regress this season, it’s largely due to a change in scenery. Brown on the Rockets with head coach Ime Udoka at the helm will bring back that defensive swagger because Brown has something to play for, and that is helping Houston return to the playoffs.
