The Philadelphia 76ers have opened the season with a 10–9 record, competitive but not yet resembling true contenders in the Eastern Conference. The team has rarely been at full strength, leaving questions about what their ceiling might be if they can finally get healthy.
One player expected to help carry the scoring load, Paul George, has only appeared in five games so far, and doubts remain about whether he will ultimately justify the four-year, $211.6 million deal he signed in July 2024.
The 35-year-old veteran is still ramping up his workload, averaging 23 minutes per game, but his production has been modest. George has averaged 14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists while shooting 41.4% from the field and 31.0% from three-point range.
For a player of his pedigree, those numbers fall short of expectations, and the 76ers will need him to find his groove if they hope to elevate themselves into the upper tier of the conference.
Philadelphia dropped Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks in overtime by a final score of 142–134. George’s status heading into the game was uncertain as he had been dealing with an ankle injury that made him a game-time decision for the matchup. Fortunately, he did suit up and logged 28 minutes, the most he has all year.
That appeared to be a positive sign that his ankle issue was behind him, and it was officially removed from the injury report.
However, the 76ers announced a new update ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Washington Wizards. George is now listed with left knee soreness and lower back tightness, carrying a questionable designation for Tuesday’s game (h/t Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice).
The Sixers have an injury report for tomorrow's game vs. Washington:
— Adam Aaronson (@SixersAdam) December 1, 2025
Joel Embiid – right knee – OUT
Paul George – knee/back – QUESTIONABLE
Andre Drummond – right knee – QUESTIONABLE
Kelly Oubre Jr. – left knee – OUT
Trendon Watford – left adductor – OUT
George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in July, so the soreness may be a lingering effect rather than a completely new setback. Still, the combination of knee and back issues underscores the challenge of managing his workload as the 76ers try to keep him healthy enough to make a meaningful impact this season.
George is now in his 16th NBA season, with nine All-Star selections, six All-NBA honors and four All-Defensive team nods to his name.
Despite all of those accolades and his reputation as one of the league’s premier two-way wings, he is still searching for his first championship. Philadelphia marks the fourth organization he has suited up for in pursuit of that goal.
