The Philadelphia 76ers spent this summer building out a roster full of veteran talent. Paul George and Eric Gordon headlined the additions to the roster. Yet, a 19-29 record halfway through the season has seen Daryl Morey begin to change course.
The Sixers are viewed as potential sellers ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. On Tuesday, Philadelphia made their first move of the trade season, sending Caleb Martin to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round pick.

Martin joined the franchise during the summer. He's played in 31 games, averaging 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He shoots 43.5% from the field and 37.9% from deep. Morey likely viewed Martin's experience helping the Miami Heat reach the 2023 NBA Finals as an essential part of the Sixers' team-building process.
However, just a few months into the experiment, Morey has swiftly pivoted to add a young, high-upside shooting guard in Grimes.
Suddenly, the Sixers appear to be a team without a plan. Despite their injury struggles, which has seen Joel Embiid limited to just 13 games this season, it would appear Morey wants the Sixers to get younger. Yet, in doing so, the front office is running the risk of creating an uneven roster.
You only need to look toward the Golden State Warriors to see how perilous the road of straddling two timelines can be. Therefore, the Sixers must pick a lane. If they want to add some more young talent, they have two more days to do so. If not, then maybe they saw Grimes as an upgrade over Martin.
Whatever their thought process, Morey must convey something to the fanbase. Things haven't gone to plan in Philadelphia this season. There's little to no hope of a championship run, and for the first time, Embiid's future with the franchise doesn't feel guaranteed.
Roster building is a tricky business. It's even worse when you keep changing direction every few months. It might not happen right away, but the signs of a full-scale rebuild are starting to appear in Philadelphia. If we see a George trade, either this week or in the summer, then it might be time to strap in for a bumpy ride.
