One day after Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers told reporters the club has a plan to help guard Ben Simmons improve his shooting that was downright dreadful throughout the postseason, team president Daryl Morey defended Philadelphia's core.
"A lot of what I'm reading I frankly don't understand," Morey said Tuesday, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN. "People [are] saying the Sixers are in a bad situation.
"I don't choose to come here, [coach Doc Rivers] doesn't choose to come here if this is a bad situation. I mean, really 25 or 26 teams in this league would love to be in our situation with an MVP-caliber top player and All-Star, near All-Star, great young players who are signed for the long term, good veterans.
"So, we've got a good foundation. We just have to do better, I have to do better, everyone has to do better."
After Simmons made only 34.2% of his free throws during the playoffs, Morey added: "I think it's pretty straightforward what certain players need to improve." Bontemps also explained Morey was noncommittal about Simmons' future with the franchise beyond the summer months.
As of Tuesday afternoon, updated betting odds continue to link Simmons with a trade away from the 76ers before the start of the 2021-22 NBA season. The Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards remain favorites to land the 24-year-old via what could become a blockbuster transaction.
