Every year, there are a handful of draft picks that outplay expectations. Part of that is because they landed on a team with a specific need, or a certain playstyle. Another part is because their game translates better to the NBA than it did to the college game.
While it's still too early to say definitively, it would appear that Yang Hansen could be this year's biggest surprise. The 7-foot rookie, who was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies and sent to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of the deal that landed Cedric Coward, has shined throughout the opening week of Summer League.
Hansen, 20, spent two years in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He played in a total of 96 games during his two seasons, averaging 15.8 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
It's that professional experience that's shining through for Portland's Summer League roster. In 76 minutes of basketball in Las Vegas, Hansen has produced 35 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, six blocks and two steals.

Hansen's style of play and diverse skill set have shades of Nikola Jokic. They move in a similar way, have a similar style of play and Hansen has tried to emulate the three-time MVP's passing ability.
Creating expectations for a rookie based on their Summer League production is never a wise choice. The internet is full of overreactions to the happenings in Las Vegas that failed to materialize once the season began.
However, Hansen's previous experience as a professional, coupled with his unique and advanced skills set, should give Portland reason for optimism. Based on everything he's shown so far, he looks ready to step straight into the team's rotation. And if he can translate his impact to the NBA while consistently improving his game, the Trail Blazers might have secured an absolute steal.
Hansen has put himself firmly in the public eye. Now, it's time to live up to the expectations he's creating for himself. On first glance, he looks more than capable.
