After their second-round playoff loss at the hands of the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the Denver Nuggets officially failed to make it back to the NBA Finals for the second consecutive season after their championship victory in 2023. However, the team made a major move to begin the offseason in hopes of turning things around.

On Monday, the Nuggets traded Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson. Johnson, who had spent parts of the last three seasons in Brooklyn, was a popular trade candidate for the entirety of last season.

Following his trade to Denver, Johnson shared his immediate reaction.

In Johnson's only two full seasons with the team, the Nets failed to make the playoffs each time. Despite this, the Pennsylvania native was a big contributor in Brooklyn, averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while shooting 47.5% from the field and 39% from the three-point line last season.

According to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, Johnson is "excited" to join the Nuggets and the opportunity to "compete for a championship."

"Johnson told me, 'I’m excited to compete for a championship. It’s a new beginning,' Scotto wrote on X.

With this trade, Johnson will now have an opportunity to return to the NBA Finals and compete for a championship for the first time since he was on the 2020-21 Phoenix Suns. The UNC product provides a lot of offensive value and can help stretch the floor for Denver.

As the Nuggets look to make it back to the big stage, this offseason will be a crucial one as they aim to bolster their roster around Nikola Jokic. With the acquisition of Johnson, they may have started the offseason exactly the way they wanted to.
