The Cleveland Cavaliers once had a promising group led by LeBron James. In 2014, James returned to the team that drafted him and formed a Big 3 with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. The 6-foot-9 forward had just won back-to-back titles in the previous four years he was with the Miami Heat. That’s why forming his second superteam had everyone betting on the Cavaliers to be in the NBA Finals.
In 2015, Cleveland couldn’t finish the job because of injuries to Irving and Love. The following year, however, the Cavaliers avenged their loss and had a historic 3-1 comeback against a 73-win Golden State Warriors team. It is regarded by many as one of the NBA’s greatest championship runs ever.
Their third year didn’t finish with a championship. They had to face the Warriors for a third-straight year. This time, however, they added Kevin Durant to their already talented roster. After that run, Irving decided to leave Cleveland and was traded to the Boston Celtics.
That was the second year since Ty Lue took over as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He recently appeared as a guest on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay.” The former NFL star asked Lue if he thinks the Cavs could’ve won more titles if Irving didn’t leave after the 2017 Finals.
“Yes, sir,” the current Los Angeles Clippers head coach said.
However, he also stated that things would have turned out differently had the Warriors not signed Durant in 2016.
“I also think if KD doesn’t go to Golden State… I think we win — and Kyrie [Irving] stays, you know you can’t leave after that. I think he stays, and I think we had a chance to win two or three.”
When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Irving, the team lost one of its best scorers. Which is why the team struggled against the Warriors. During Lue’s guest appearance at Sharpe’s show, the head coach revealed that James was “crushed” when Irving was traded to Boston.
“LeBron was doing an autograph signing with jerseys and stuff for his foundation,” Lue said. “So I come sit next to Bron, we’re sitting there, hand him the phone, SportsCenter says Kyrie Irving’s just been traded to the Boston Celtics. Man, Bron dropped the marker, just lays back in his chair for about 10 minutes and doesn’t say a word. Just pissed off. Bron was crushed.”
Since then, it has been difficult for the Cavaliers to beat the Warriors, their biggest hurdle to a championship. Although Cleveland went to the Finals for a fourth-straight year, they lost a ton of firepower when Uncle Drew left.
