A closer look at the revamped Milwaukee Bucks coaching staff
USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Bucks’ road to redemption next season will start with a reshaped coaching staff. Returning personnel, first-timers, and holdovers will compose Milwaukee’s coaching crew.

Here’s a look at the personnel that will man the Bucks’ coaching bench.

Adrian Griffin (Head coach)

This 48-year-old former NBA player is filling the void vacated by the dismissed Mike Budenholzer.

Griffin played in the NBA from 1996-2008. He started his coaching career in the NBA when he was tapped as an assistant coach to Scott Skiles with the Bucks from 2008-2010.

He also worked as an assistant coach in Chicago, Orlando, Oklahoma City, and Toronto, where he won a championship in 2021.

Terry Stotts (Assistant coach)

The veteran coach will have his second coaching job in Milwaukee. His first coaching stint was with the Albany Patroons, where he served as an assistant coach from 1990-1991.

From Albany, he moved to Fort Wayne Fury, Seattle, and Milwaukee as an assistant coach. Stotts' first head coaching job was with Atlanta in 2002.

He left Atlanta in 2004 and was named as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. He then became the head coach of the Bucks from 2005-2007.

After the Bucks, Stotts went back to being an assistant coach at Dallas from 2008-2012. Terry then transferred to Portland, where he coached the team from 2012-2021.

Stotts was away from the NBA after that Portland stint before he was hired again by the Bucks.

Joe Puntry (Assistant coach)

Just like Stotts, Puntry also had previous stints with the Bucks. He started his coaching career in San Antonio, where he was an assistant from 1996-2005.

Puntry also had stints as an assistant in Dallas (2005-2008), Portland (2008-2010), Cleveland (2010-2013), Brooklyn (2013-2014), and Milwaukee (2014-2018).

At one point in the 2018 season, Puntry was the interim head coach of the Bucks when Jason Kidd took a medical leave.

From Milwaukee, Puntry moved to Phoenix (2018-2019) and then to Atlanta (2021-2023) before finding his way back to Milwaukee for the upcoming season.

Patrick Mutombo (Assistant coach)

Mutombo’s coaching career started with Metro State from (2011-2012). He is also a previous assistant coach at Denver (2012-2015), the Austin Spurs (2015-2016), the Toronto (2016-2020), the Raptors 305 (2020-2022), and the Phoenix Suns(20220-2023).

Josh Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is one of the two remaining members of the Budenholzer coaching staff.

Oppenheimer has been with several teams as an assistant coach. He served as one of the assistants with Milwaukee from 2013-2016.

He then moved to Houston as an assistant from 2016-2017. He was also an assistant with the Long Island Nets (2017-2018) and with the James Madison Dukes (2019-2020).

Oppenheimer has been with the Bucks as an assistant since 2020.

Vin Baker (Assistant coach)

Just like Oppenheimer, Baker was retained by the Bucks as an assistant coach.

Baker was the 8th overall pick by the Bucks in the 1993 NBA Draft. The four-time NBA All-Star was credited for the development of Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis Jr.

Baker has been with the Bucks as an assistant coach since 2018.

DJ Bakker (Assistant coach)

Bakker will join the Bucks coaching staff from the Motor City Cruise, the Detroit Pistons’ G-League affiliate.

Bakker served as Motor City’s head coach for the past two seasons.

Nate Mitchell (Assistant coach)

Mitchell is known as a player development coach. He handled the Canadian men’s team at the under-23 Global Jam tournament at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

RJ Barrett, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Andrew Nembhard are just among the Canadian NBA players who worked with Mitchell during the summer.
