A fan’s wish for the Heat offense

The Heat offense so far has generated good looks at the basket, but they are missing. Most fan opinions of the Heat offense should be “Giannis drives, shooters ready.” But, with a fellow player like Bam Adebayo, the offense needs to be different.

Off-ball / basic function

Most of the time, the main “bread and butter” for the Heat offense is going to be Giannis Antetokounmpo or Bam Adebayo making an initial drive and kicking out to shooters. But since both players know how to play off-the-ball, they can run actions where they run defenses ragged. Giannis would have to develop his jump shot.

Bam and Giannis can play a two-man game where they set screens for one another or they can take the opposing big man out of the low block and allow drives by Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell. The Heat can be a devastating half-court offense but there would have to be pinpoint passing between all five on the court.

Shaquille O’Neal did something similar with his time in Miami. He would take the ball in the post on the initial action but expertly passed out of the double team to setup Wade and/or shooters. The Heat currently are in the bottom tier of NBA teams in secondary assists and potential assists.

Giannis mid-range jumper

Giannis has only taken seven mid-range shots and made two of them. Bam has only taken two mid-range shots and missed both. Bam and Giannis have made seven of 22 jump shots. The versatility of the these two players must be maximized. Every opposing defense looks like they’re waiting for the drives to the basket.

Dwayne Wade’s shot profile development was well documented. From Erik Spoelstra’s work with him on the practice court to improve his jumper to David Fizdale’s work on his post-up game. Giannis and Bam are versatile defenders and now they must develop their offensive shot profile to work together.

Final take

The Heat should examine more mid-range jump shots. After last night’s game, criticisms of the players surrounding Giannis is boiling hot. The Heat are taking 19.5 shots per game in the mid-range and 42 shots per game between 20-29 feet. It’s black or white, when now it should be gray.

Dwayne Wade drops some knowledge on the Jaren Jackson Jr. podcast above about combining talents with Lebron (33:00 mark.) Giannis and Bam should be talking with one another constantly and holding themselves accountable. They will ultimately be the two that will contribute to the most wins.
