Sunday, June 22 was already going to be a monumental day in the NBA, with Game 7 of the NBA Finals set to take place between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers taking place.
It got even more monumental in the early afternoon, with an announced trade between the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns for former league MVP and multi-time NBA Champion Kevin Durant.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and a total of five second-round picks to Phoenix for Durant in return.
Over the next few hours and days, a lot of discussion will come from this, whether it's about the price of the trade for the Rockets, what the Suns might do going forward, or how this addition impacts the Rockets' championship potential going forward.
In the immediate aftermath, though, a lot of NBA fans had one similar reaction to the timing of the news, in particular.
Why today, just hours before the biggest game of the year?
"Absolutely demonic doing this the day of a Finals Game 7," The Ringer's Megan Schuster said. "Shoutout to both of these teams."
"Game 7 of the NBA Finals tonight and the entire day/pregame show is going to be spent discussing a blockbuster trade," said NBA analyst Rob Perez. "Pull this (expletive) during the Super Bowl and Roger Goodell would exile you like Napoleon."
"David Stern would have never allowed this trade to be announced today," a fan added on social media.
"Adam Silver should be tried for war crimes for allowing this trade to happen hours before game 7 of the nba finals," another fan said.
Timing aside, this is an interesting trade for both teams. Assuming that Durant can continue to play at a high level for the next couple of years, the Rockets will be in a great position to compete in the Western Conference, with the elite scorer joining the group of Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun, and Fred VanVleet. Meanwhile, there is a belief that the Suns are likely to blow it up this offseason, and could potentially trade Green again in the near future as they look to reload.
