When Adrian Wojnarowski left ESPN to go back home and take the job at St. Bonaventure it wasn't for the money.
The NBA insider, who shockingly left his post as basketball's top news breaker late last year, reportedly makes just 1% of the salary he did at the Worldwide Leader, according to The New York Times Magazine.
That would mean Woj makes roughly $75,000 working for the Bonnies. But his personal well-being seems to be in a much better place trying to help his alma mater than digging up nonstop scoops for ESPN.
As Bruce Schoenfeld writes:
When he is asked why he would walk away from $20 million still left on his ESPN contract to spend his days driving through the snow to half-empty arenas, this is what he tries to explain. A reporter his entire adult life, he has immersed himself in other people's teams. St. Bonaventure basketball is his team. And as the ground continues to shift beneath college sports, perhaps only he can save it.
Back in December the 55-year-old revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer just six months before his unexpected retirement announcement.
"I didn't want to spend one more day of my life waiting on someone's MRI or hitting an agent at 1 AM about an ankle sprain," Wojnarowski told Chris Mannix in a conversation with Sports Illustrated.
"In the end it's just going to be your family and close friends. And it's also, like, nobody gives a [expletive]," the former insider continued. "Nobody remembers [breaking stories] in the end. It's just vapor."
That may be a bit heavy-handed, as Woj's legacy as one of basketball's top reporters will live on for years to come.
But it's understandable that he would prefer to pour the valuable time he has left into a passion project that truly moves him.
