The Golden State Warriors have completed their initial significant offseason transaction.
Shams Charania reported on Sunday that the Warriors have agreed to a multi-year deal with Al Horford, just one day before media day.
Financial details are still being finalized, and the deal is expected to be completed soon, pending restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga’s decision.
Horford – the Warriors’ primary target since becoming a free agent in July – is anticipated to be their starting centre in the upcoming season.
Stephen A. Smith shared his thoughts on the signing, saying he believes Horford is a great fit for Golden State’s style of play.
He posted on X: “This is a good damn pickup for the Warriors. The ageless Horford can still defend, can shoot (spread the floor) and it’ll help Dray[mond Green]! Love it.”

BREAKING: Free agent Al Horford has committed to a multi-year deal with the Golden State Warriors… – via @ESPN App https://t.co/yxBuHM6xxS
Horford turned 38 last year, but his numbers from last season showed he was still productive in his role.
He averaged 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds while hitting 36% of his shots from beyond the arc.
His outside shooting could be a real asset for Golden State, who need a centre who can open up space – especially when you have someone like Stephen Curry creating so much attention on offence.
Even at 38, Horford still adds value on defence. Opponents managed just 45.2% shooting against him last season, and while he might not have the same quickness as earlier in his career, his experience and positioning help make up for it.
His defensive versatility and floor spacing fit exactly what the Warriors look for in their big men. On both ends of the court, he brings a skill set that meshes well with Draymond Green, adding another layer to Golden State’s frontcourt.
The Warriors have reportedly secured a deal to bring back De’Anthony Melton, adding one more familiar presence to their roster for the upcoming season.
