Alcorn State University officially introduced Jake Morton as the new head men's basketball coach on Wednesday. The longtime assistant gets his first full-time role with the HBCU.
Morton arrives in Mississippi with a wealth of knowledge for the game. As an assistant, he had stints with nine different schools, including his alma mater, Miami (FL). Florida State, East Carolina, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, Coppin State, James Madison, St. Francis (PA), and Bowie State are also on Morton's resume.
"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Morton to the Alcorn family," Alcorn State athletic director E. Dwayne Robinson said in a press conference. "His leadership, championship-caliber mindset, and dedication to player development make him an ideal fit to lead our men's basketball program into a new era."
Morton was a standout collegiate player at Miami with 909 points, 245 rebounds and 194 assists in 113 career games. He never latched on to an NBA team but played six seasons overseas.
"I'm very excited to be named the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Alcorn State University. With the support of President Cook and A.D. Robinson, there is no doubt that we can take this program into the next stage of greatness," Morton said.
Alcorn State went 11-20 under Landon Bussie last season. The Braves were bounced in the first round of the 2025 SWAC men's basketball tournament. Bussie ended up as the head coach at Chicago State University.
