Alex Rodriguez And Marc Lore Take The Last Steps To Finalize Sale of Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves majority owner Glen Taylor has been looking to sell the team for years now, and it appears he's finally closing in on a purchase. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the sale is now in its final stages after Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez officially submitted signed financial documentation.

"Just in: Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez have submitted signed financial documentation to NBA to complete the acquisition of majority controlling ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx from Glen Taylor, multiple sources with direct knowledge told me," wrote Shams. "Dyal Capital Partners has joined as a pre-approved investor in the Lore-Rodriguez group, giving them the final financial backing necessary to complete the transaction, sources said. Lore and Rodriguez are ready to close the sale as soon as NBA approves."

This sale has been years in the making, with the first announcement coming as far back as 2021, when the former Yankees star first revealed his plans to purchase the team for $1.5 billion. Rodriguez, a baseball legend around the world, had no official ties to the Timberwolves. Still, he and his business partner Marc Lore, have been operating as a "limited partner" with Taylor for two and a half years as the succession process has played out.

Things got to a point where Rodriguez had to put a hold on his offer as he scrambled to come up with the money, but it seems he's found another partner to add to his investment group.

As a franchise perpetually stuck in mediocrity, most Timberwolves fans couldn't be happier that this deal is finally going through. As for the players, it probably doesn't make much of a difference to them either way. In fact, Anthony Edwards has already admitted openly that he doesn't even know who Alex Rodriguez is.

No matter your thoughts on Rodriguez, it's a big deal that the Glen Taylor era is finally coming to an end in Minnesota and it signals the start of a new identity for this franchise. Fresh off a much-improved season, with new governors in charge and a superstar ready to compete for a title, the Timberwolves will enter next season ready to prove themselves as a legitimate contender and it will be uncharted territory for the franchise.

Are The Timberwolves Ready To Win The Title?

As far as timing goes, Rodriguez couldn't have picked a better moment to finalize his purchase of the team. After decades and decades of losing basketball, the Timberwolves built up a reputation for being dysfunctional and largely irrelevant in the NBA title race.

Recently, however, their situation has changed. Beginning with the acquisition of Andrew Wiggins in 2014, Minnesota accumulated a mix of young talent and draft assets with hopes of one day increasing their title odds.

It was through the draft that Minnesota found their stars, and it was through Anthony Edwards And Karl-Anthony Towns that they began to flash championship potential.

The trade for Rudy Gobert in 2022 was the final piece that the Wolves needed to compete. With a defensive anchor in the middle, they've been among the best two-way teams in the game.

This season, while Minnesota ranks third in the West, nobody is ready to definitively put them on par with teams like the Nuggets, Warriors, or Los Angeles Lakers, who have all proven themselves in the past.

For this team, only ultimate playoff success will change their legacy and this year is perhaps their best chance yet with good vibes, a stacked roster, and a young superstar who is eager to prove himself as one of the greats.
