Alperen Sengun has limited playoff experience, but his first postseason left a lasting impression.
The Houston Rockets finished second in the Western Conference last season before falling to the Golden State Warriors in a seven-game first-round series.
Alperen Sengun recently reflected on that difficult matchup, explaining why the Warriors presented the most challenging opponent possible for Houston.
The Turkish center believes that the Warriors are the team the Rockets least want to face.
This is not only because of Stephen Curry and company’s experience, but also because Sengun thinks they received favorable officiating throughout the series while Houston faced stricter enforcement.
“The Warriors were probably the one team that would have given us the most trouble, and we drew them,” Sengun said. “They’re a very experienced team, and they fouled a lot. In the playoffs, they don’t call it. But they were the ones crying all series about fouls not being called.”
“When it comes to us, we’re not really allowed to complain. It’s more of an internal thing. Ime Udoka doesn’t allow it. He loses his mind if we complain.”
Sengun struggled a bit during that series, shooting just 45% compared to his 49.6% regular season percentage.
The primary challenge came from defending Draymond Green, though Sengun insisted the matchup didn’t intimidate him.
The young center demonstrated his confidence by dunking on Green during the series.
“Never in my life has something like this scared me. If anything, it makes me angry,” Sengun explained.
Sengun may face the Warriors again in next season’s playoffs. However, the dynamics could shift significantly with Kevin Durant now alongside him in Houston.
Durant providing another elite scorer who knows Golden State’s system intimately from his previous tenure with the franchise.
