Amen Thompson lands stunning new contract with the Rockets

Amen Thompson will be with the Houston Rockets for more years to come. 

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Thursday that Thompson and the Rockets have agreed to a new multi-year deal.

“Houston Rockets’ Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with the franchise, sources tell ESPN. The new deal includes a 10% trade kicker,” the NBA insider wrote on X.

Thompson was the fourth-overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He inked a 4-year, $40 million rookie scale contract that year with the Rockets, who have since picked up two club options on the guard-forward, including one that’s worth $12.26 million for the 2026-27 campaign.

Thompson’s new contract underscores how much Houston values not just what he’s done for the team so far, but his potential to be an even bigger contributor on both ends of the court in the years to come.

In the 2025-26 NBA season, only Kevin Durant had higher win shares (10.7) than Thompson (10.3) among Rockets players. Thompson was also third on the team with a value over replacement player of 3.4 and finished eighth in the league in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Together with Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr., Thompson represents the bright future of a Houston team, particularly once Durant eventually leaves.

The 23-year-old Thompson posted career highs of 18.3 points and 5.3 assists per game in the 2025-26 season, while averaging 7.8 rebounds. He’s still far from a finished product, and the Rockets may be hoping he becomes a more potent perimeter threat, since he’s only a career 21.9% shooter from deep.
