Despite Constantly Golfing With Michael Jordan, Ray Allen Reveals His Reasons For Never Asking For Signatures On His Shoes
Tom R. Smedes/Special to RGJ / USA TODAY NETWORK

A Michael Jordan-signed sneaker isn’t just a collector’s dream, it’s practically a piece of basketball history. Some of the pairs have sold for tens of thousands of dollars, and MJ himself has famously been selective about who gets his signature, often reserving it for close friends, former teammates, or people he genuinely respects.

MJ is an avid golfer, so if anyone golfs with him, they’re automatically a part of his inner circle. Despite being a regular golf partner of the Bulls legend, Hall of Famer Ray Allen doesn’t have a signed Jordan shoe.

Allen has a lot of respect and admiration for the six-time NBA Champion. Despite being LeBron James’ ex-teammate, he has picked MJ in the GOAT debate. He once said, “MJ, all day long, only because of how I played against him. MJ just had everything, from midrange to 3-point to post-up game, and he could score and dominate in each position.”

During a conversation with Dan Patrick, the host noticed that Allen has a wall behind him that’s stacked with sneakers. “Mike signed any shoes that you have?” Patrick asked. The 49-year-old said that he didn’t have a Michael Jordan signed sneaker in his collection before revealing his reason.

He said, “I haven’t [asked him]. Like, I have a jersey that’s up on my wall, I play golf with him regularly. I wouldn’t ask him, but I think at some point I should in the future, just for keepsake, just to have a memento.”

Allen said that he is confident MJ wouldn’t decline his request if he asked him. Which is why he will do it sometime shortly.

Ray Allen once asked Michael Jordan for training equipment

During the conversation with Patrick, Allen recalled an interesting story from his third year in the league, when he used to play for Milwaukee. He had a game against the Bulls at the United Center, and it was his habit to reach the facility early. Unfortunately, he went there too early, and none of his equipment was there for him to practice.

So, someone from the Bulls management came to his locker room and told him that MJ is on the other side and if he wants something to get started, he should go and ask him. After hesitating to go ask MJ for shoes, Allen decided it was better than wasting time.

He said, “I went in there and I was like, ‘Mike, you think I could borrow a pair of shoes?’ And I’m already wearing the shoes anyway, I’m under contract. And he’s like, ‘Sure, kid. In the hall.” Allen walked in, picked a pair of Jordans for himself, and went to practice.

76ers unexpectedly waive veteran guard despite career season

The Sixers are waiving Ricky Council IV, the team announced in a press release. Council signed a four-year, partially guaranteed deal with the Sixers in 2024, which contained a team option for the 2026-27 season. Last season, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 17.1 minutes per night — all career-high numbers. Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports notes that the timing of the move was unexpected, given that Council’s guarantee date is on Jan. 10, 2026, and the team currently has an open roster spot if they need it to add restricted free agent Quentin Grimes. While Council struggled with his three-point shot last season, he emerged as a reliable depth contributor, playing a team-high 73 games while bringing athleticism and energy from the wing positions.

Packers rookie could miss time after suffering injury in training camp

The Green Bay Packers offense was dealt a bit of a blow early in training camp. Friday, third-round rookie wide receiver Savion Williams was a spectator for practice after suffering a concussion. Williams, chosen by the Packers with the No. 87 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, is aiming to climb the depth chart at a crowded wide receiver position this summer. At 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Williams ran the 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.48 seconds during the NFL Combine and has the profile of potentially becoming a reliable possession receiver and after-the-catch weapon for quarterback Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense. Reaching those benchmarks and climbing the depth chart will have to wait, though, as Williams works his way through the concussion protocol and back onto the field for practices during training camp and the preseason this summer.

Orioles infielder set to make MLB debut after Gregory Soto trade

The Orioles are going to select infielder Jeremiah Jackson to their roster. Manager Tony Mansolino informed reporters, including Steve Melewski, that he will take the roster spot vacated by left-hander Gregory Soto. Soto was traded to the Mets earlier on Friday. Jackson, 25, gets called up to the majors for the first time and will be making his debut as soon as he gets into a game. He signed a minor league deal with the club in the offseason and has been putting up huge numbers in the minors this year. Split between Double-A and Triple-A, he has 351 plate appearances with 15 home runs. He’s only drawing walks at a 4% clip but is also only striking out 14.2% of the time. He has a combined line of .311/.340/.538 line and a 135 wRC+. Prior to joining the Orioles, Jackson spent time in the systems of the Angels and Mets. The Halos flipped him to the latter club in the 2023 deadline deal , which sent right-hander Dominic Leone to Los Angeles. The lack of strikeouts this year is notable, as that was a key problem for Jackson in previous seasons. He had a 33% strikeout rate in 2021, but he has dropped that down over the years. Defensively, he’s played the three infield spots to the left of first base and all three outfield spots as well. He has some speed on the bases, regularly putting up double-digit stolen bases totals, including ten already this year. It’s possible that this will be a short big league stint for Jackson. Putting him in for Soto gives the club 14 position players and just 12 pitchers. That’s less than ideal, and they will likely look to even that back to 13 and 13 soon. On the other hand, it’s possible the Baltimore roster is set for further moves in the coming days. Ryan O’Hearn, Ramón Urías, Ramón Laureano, Cedric Mullins, Zach Eflin, Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano, Trevor Rogers, Seranthony Domínguez and Andrew Kittredge are all candidates to be moved before the deadline. It’s anyone’s guess how the roster will look in the wake of all those theoretical trades. Since Jackson can play multiple positions, perhaps he’ll find a way to still have a role once the dust settles next week.

Sherrone Moore says Michigan will do away with controversial celebration

Michigan and Ohio State are sure to play another spirited game on the gridiron this season, but it sounds like there will be no flag planting afterward regardless of the outcome. Michigan won its fourth straight game against Ohio State last season, and the Wolverines' latest victory was the biggest upset the rivalry has seen in years. The eventual national champion Buckeyes were ranked No. 2 in the country when an unranked Michigan team went into Columbus and beat them, 13-10. A huge scrum broke out after the game when Michigan players stood on Ohio State's midfield logo and pretended to plant their flag in enemy territory. The brawl got so out of hand that stadium police wound up using pepper spray. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said his players will not be partaking in any flag-planting activity going forward. "There will be no more flag planting. There will be no more grabbing the flag," Moore said. "We talked about our new tradition and what we do when we win a game is go beat the band, go sing our (fight song) and stay over there until the other team departs. That's how we'll operate — shake hands after the game, show sportsmanship, be cordial." While there has been no formal ban of flag planting, Ohio State coach Ryan Day also expressed opposition to the act after last year's incident. Ohio State and Michigan have one of the best rivalries in sports, so there is always going to be bad blood between the two programs. Moore and Day are doing what they can to make sure things don't get out of hand again the next time their teams meet.
