Warriors prioritize flexibility over center depth, shun Dwight Howard
The Golden State Warriors will not acquire Dwight Howard for the upcoming season. The veteran big man had previously worked out for Golden State. Howard then traveled to Los Angeles to work out with Draymond Green and Chris Paul.
According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Golden State is expected to keep their final roster spots open to maintain flexibility heading into the new season.
"The Warriors are not expected to sign Dwight Howard or another veteran center ahead of training camp, sources tell me," Charania wrote. "Howard had a two-day visit with the Warriors this week, which included meetings and workouts, but the Warriors are expected to maintain flexibility to sign a potential big man later in camp or into the regular season."
While maintaining some roster flexibility is always a smart move for a contending team, the Warriors currently have two open roster spots and could have maintained flexibility while also acquiring Howard. Golden State's current roster is lacking in center depth, with Dario Saric the only experienced big on the roster.
By passing on Howard, the Warriors are taking a risk. The veteran big man would have provided the rim protection and rebounding the roster needs. Now, Howard is free to sign elsewhere in the league or abroad. There's still a chance the Warriors will go back to the former Los Angeles Lakers champion before the season starts, but in truth, it's unlikely.
Another big man is needed in the Bay Area. Golden State has worked out no fewer than eight veteran players in recent weeks, including Derek Favors, who could be another option at center. Keeping roster flexibility makes sense. Turning down a clear depth piece with upside does not. Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy is taking a risk by passing on Howard. Only time will tell how that risk plays out.
