Andre Drummond sees no stopping Victor Wembanyama but claims Knicks have another route

The Knicks and Spurs open the NBA Finals on Wednesday in San Antonio, renewing a matchup that still carries deep history for New York.

The last time the Knicks reached this stage, Tim Duncan’s Spurs beat them in five games in 1999. Now, Victor Wembanyama stands in the same franchise’s way.

According to Andre Drummond, that makes the tactical question obvious. New York must decide whether to load up on the Frenchman or accept his production and attack the rest of San Antonio’s rhythm.

Andre Drummond says Knicks need different Victor Wembanyama plan

The Philadelphia 76ers big man and two-time All-Star offered a blunt answer on how to defend Wembanyama during Monday’s N3on stream crossover.

“I don’t think there’s an answer [for Wembanyama]. He’s 7’7”, he can play like a guard, he stands right here (points to the backboard).

“What are you gonna do about that? Slow down everybody else, all the other guards, and let him do his thing. They got a chance,” he stated.

It was blunt, but it made sense. Wembanyama has led the Spurs through the postseason, while Stephon Castle has emerged as their second scoring option.

Castle’s production makes him the obvious pressure point if the Knicks accept Drummond’s logic. He has averaged 19.2 playoff points, giving San Antonio a second creator when Wembanyama draws bodies.

The challenge is that the Spurs are not built around only two names. Dylan Harper, De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie have all supplied offense in different stretches.

Fox is still trying to recover his best form after an ankle injury. Vassell and Champagnie can punish help, while Harper has added another layer to a young backcourt.

That is why Drummond’s view feels practical rather than defeatist. The Knicks may not stop Wembanyama, but they can still win if they make every other Spurs possession harder.
