Anthony Davis played a key role for the Dallas Mavericks in Thursday’s crucial win over the Detroit Pistons. The contest needed an extra period to determine a winner, and it was the Mavs who prevailed, 116-114.

Davis chipped in with 15 points on 7-of-18 shooting, to go along with 14 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and one triple in 37 minutes of action. The 32-year-old was initially listed as questionable to play against Detroit due to a calf injury, but Davis was able to play through the issue.

The 10-time All-Star, however, was forced to exit the game twice, albeit for a different reason.

A calf injury kept Davis out for the better part of November, but he has since been back in action for the Mavs. He sat out on Monday against the Jazz due to the same calf issue, but he returned to action to help Dallas secure an upset over the Pistons on Thursday.

Davis spoke to reporters after the game to explain why he had to leave the contest twice. As it turns out, the five-time All-NBA big man battled through an illness during the game.

“Still feel under the weather,” he said. “Actually threw up twice during the game. Just trying to compete and just trying to do whatever I can to help the team win. Just leaving it all on the floor. Calf is good.”

To his credit, Davis still returned to finish out the game despite having to head to the locker room twice to throw up. It was a valiant effort by the veteran, who helped lead Dallas to its third win in four games.

Nevertheless, Davis’ status for their next game will be worth monitoring. The Mavs, who improved to 11-17 after Thursday’s victory, will be back in action on Saturday in a road game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Tip-off from Xfinity Mobile Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
