Three teams are circling for Dallas Mavericks power forward, Anthony Davis and the market just got louder. The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors are expected to position themselves as trade suitors for him.
All three teams have the assets to make a serious offer, and each sits firmly in the East playoff mix. A potential Davis move would immediately shift the conference landscape.
The Pistons might be planning one of the most ambitious moves of the season. Reports suggest that the No. 1 seed Pistons are targeting Anthony Davis and may be considering a deal centered around Jaden Ivey, power forward Tobias Harris, expiring contracts, and draft picks.
Trading for Davis feels too much like the Blake Griffin situation. The Pistons got Griffin in 2018, and while he helped them reach the playoffs, injuries and his big contract limited their options later. Like Griffin, Davis is a good player who could help win games but likely not a championship. His injury history and contract might also become a problem as he ages.
The potential acquisition of an often-injured player, such as Davis, may present considerable risk for the Hawks. The trade involving Kristaps Porzingis could provide the team with enhanced rebounding and defensive capabilities.
Should Davis remain healthy, he would position the Hawks as title contenders in the Eastern Conference. The concern over his health prevents the organization from allocating draft assets to a player with uncertain reliability, particularly with a promising future ahead.
For the Raptors to make a salary-matching offer to the Mavericks, they would need to include small forward RJ Barrett and center Jakob Poeltl in the trade package. With Davis joining power forward Scottie Barnes and shooting guard Brandon Ingram, they would form a formidable trio in a competitive Eastern Conference.
Davis’ exceptional talent is widely recognized, though he has faced health issues during his career. The Raptors took a calculated risk in acquiring small forward Kawhi Leonard, resulting in their championship win in 2019.
He is once again at the focal point of trading discussions. Numerous teams are inquiring about his availability, and interest is rapidly increasing.
The Pistons or the Hawks would be excellent fits for him right now. A combination of Cade Cunningham and Davis or Trae Young and Davis could lead to immediate 50-win seasons. The fact that the Raptors are also involved indicates just how much Scottie Barnes’ value has risen this year.
