The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Frenchman Joan Beringer with the 17th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
At 6-foot-11, Joan Beringer scores primarily as a lob threat and cutter in the pick-and-roll.
Defensively, Beringer stays vertical to block shots at the rim and has impressive footwork to switch onto smaller guards.
Once the Minnesota Timberwolves took Beringer in the 2025 NBA Draft, fans immediately drew comparisons to Rudy Gobert.
Not only are both players French, but they have similar play styles at the center position.
Beringer could eventually replace Gobert in the Timberwolves’ future.
The 18-year-old will be a project and may spend time in the G League, but Beringer reportedly could eventually see extended minutes in the NBA because the team thinks he can play defense right now.
Beringer has been spending time with his Timberwolves’ teammates at training camp and Anthony Edwards already likes what he sees from the rookie.
“Joan don’t stop playing hard, he don’t get tired. He’s got a non-stop motor.
“That’s going to push him to the next level.”
The Timberwolves also added another young big man this summer in Rocco Zikarsky.
He was selected with the 45th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls and his draft rights were immediately traded to the Timberwolves.
On July 9, he then signed a two-way contract with the Timberwolves. Zikarsky is 19 years old and stands at a towering 7’3″ tall.
Edwards shared his early thoughts on Zikarsky after going up against him in practice.
“Those guys they are incredible right now.
“Rocco blocked my shot during a drill today, I was like ‘how?’ It don’t even make sense.”
The Timberwolves have their sights set on the NBA title this season, but they have some nice young pieces who could see some playing time earlier than expected.
