The state of Minnesota is hungry for a championship. Among the big four men's American sports leagues, the Minnesota Twins were the last team to capture a title when they captured the 1991 World Series.
Since then, the Timberwolves have reached the Western Conference Finals three times but have never made it to the NBA Finals. Anthony Edwards has vowed to rewrite history and bring the Timberwolves a franchise-first Larry O'Brien Trophy.
"I know that [expletive] would be so fun for Minnesota. I already know," he told The Athletic about what a championship would mean to his adopted state. "That's why I be trying to do it. … Don't worry about it. I'm going to make it happen. I'm going to get fly as hell to where they can't stop me."
As part of his plan to become "fly as hell," Edwards is committed to becoming the most unstoppable force on a basketball court, on both ends, starting with the 2025-26 season. To do so, he has been working tirelessly on his mid-range game, especially after watching Shai Gilgeous-Alexander "cook" his team in last season's Western Conference Finals. Edwards spent most of his summer working on his mid-range game after receiving advice from the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan.
Besides Jordan, Edwards has the benefit of reaching out to another all-time sporting icon, Alex Rodriguez, the owner of the Timberwolves, for guidance. Much like Edwards, Rodriguez was a No. 1 pick in his sport and carried the burden of a franchise. Rodriguez has been in Edwards' ear, sharing with him the blueprint to greatness.
"He has his own vision. He wants to be one of the greatest of all time, but he doesn’t want to be a social media star," Rodriguez said of Edwards. "He wants to be Jordan-esque, Larry Bird-esque, Magic Johnson-esque. And he knows the responsibility he has on his shoulders to put people around him."
Last season, the Timberwolves reached back-to-back conference finals for the first time in franchise history as Edwards, the "legend killer," eliminated LeBron James and Stephen Curry from the playoffs. Can they take another step this year?
