Jaylen Brown has formed into a superstar for the Boston Celtics since he was drafted third overall in the 2016 NBA draft. The veteran shares the spotlight with his co-star, Jayson Tatum, who have both seen their names in a fair amount of trade rumors for years now, but this offseason for Boston feels different.
An early exit in the playoffs for a team that is used to deep playoff runs every year may have them wondering if now is the time to finally separate the dynamic duo. With how things are looking, and some of the things that Brown has stated since the first round exit, a JB trade is looking more and more likely as we get closer to the draft.
Trading Brown is definitely not what a lot of Boston fans want to see, as they’ve seen the progression he’s made throughout his career. The 29-year-old had a career year this season, putting up career highs in points, rebounds, and assists with averages of 28.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 5.1 apg. Now might be the best time to trade him because he’s at his highest value that he has probably ever been at in his career. Brown has said on a live stream that this past season was his favorite, which made many people wonder if he said that because he enjoyed being the first option.
The shooting guard has also recently put his penthouse in Boston up for sale, which has sparked many rumors that he might be dealt. A trade for Brown would include either another big name player heading back to Boston or some younger players and draft picks. A name that has been linked to the Celtics has been Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the injury concerns might have the Celtics backing out of a deal. A trade for younger players and draft picks might be the smarter move if they do decide to move on from Brown.
It will be interesting to watch what the Celtics do this offseason. After a year where everyone was writing them off, to a year that seemed to be filled with hope, only to be crushed come playoff time. Brad Stevens and the front office in Boston will have their hands full because after blowing a three games to one series lead, a busy offseason is upon them. One thing is for sure: if they do make Brown available in trade talks, the whole league will make a call for one of the best two-way players in the world.
