Are the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Finals Contenders in 2026?

For weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers had been linked to Jonathan Kuminga as the frontrunner for the small forward services.  Surprisingly, multiple reports and rumors were incorrect, and Kuminga signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves. A franchise unlike the Los Angeles Lakers, that are not known for being aggressive in Free Agency.

Minnesota, uncharacteristically, has been aggressive during the offseason, showing their star shooting guard Anthony Edwards that the front office is willing to spend and put a championship roster around Ant-Man.

Kuminga spoke via The Athletic as to why he chose the Timberwolves over the Lakers: “Jonathan Kuminga on choosing Minnesota over the Lakers, “Not to come off disrespectful, but I didn’t feel like Los Angeles was the right environment for me. There’s a level of expectation and outside noise surrounding the Lakers that can become distracting, and I wanted a situation where I could stay focused on basketball and my development. I also felt Minnesota offered a better defensive fit and a clearer role for me. Ultimately, it was the better situation.”

Players normally never choose Minnesota over Los Angeles. The bright lights of Hollywood, palm trees, and weather normally attract free agents, and the Lakers’ history of winning, which speaks volumes about what the Minnesota Timberwolves are building to become an attractive destination in free agency.
