The Oklahoma City Thunder have been one of the best teams in the NBA this season and they may become even better ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline if they decide to make some moves.
Oklahoma City currently sits at the top of the Western Conference standings with a 34-7 record. They have been the West’s most dominant team this season despite missing multiple of their key players due to injury.
They have been without Chet Holmgren since early November due to a hip injury and they recently saw Isaiah Hartenstein go down with a calf strain. Despite these injuries, the Thunder have still been dominant thanks to their star duo of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams along with their roster depth.
With the Thunder yet to be fully healthy this season, they are likely to become an even better team when both Holmgren and Hartenstein return, but they may also be active in the trade market ahead of the deadline. They have not been linked to many players but one that has continued to show up in trade rumors is Cameron Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets.
Johnson is a three-point sharpshooter that is one of the most sought-after players on the trade block this season, but what might the Thunder have to give up to acquire him?
According to Forbes’ Evan Sidery, the Nets believe that they will be able to secure two first-round picks for Johnson and are set to wait closer to the deadline to trade him so that they can maximize his value.
It is also likely that Brooklyn will also be looking to acquire expiring contracts and more young players along with two first-round picks in a potential deal.
Of course, the Thunder have enough young talent and draft picks to pull off really any trade they want, so they should easily be able to land Johnson from Brooklyn. They are currently one of the favorites to land the 28-year-old due to this reason.
There is expected to be a bidding war between multiple teams for Johnson, but with the amount of draft capital Oklahoma City has, they should be able to outbid any other team for the sharpshooter if they choose to do so.
