Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics were able to exceed expectations during the 2025-26 NBA regular season. Brown led Boston to a 56-26 record, good enough for the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Division and the No. 2 overall seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics were upset early in the 2026 NBA playoffs after falling to Tyrese Maxey and the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round. Philadelphia pulled off a historic comeback after being down 3-1 in the series, winning Game 7, 109-100. Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum, who had returned before the playoffs from his ACL injury, aggravated his other leg and was unable to play in the deciding game.

With trade rumors swirling about the viability of trading Brown, the Atlanta Hawks have been one of the teams most linked to the 10-year veteran. In the midst of the trade rumors, Atlanta has traded for a guard, just not the one people expected. On Monday, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on the social media platform X that the Hawks acquired guard Devin Carter from the Sacramento Kings, along with a future second-round NBA draft pick.

Carter is entering his third year after being drafted in the lottery (No. 13 overall) in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft. The 2024 Big East Player of the Year didn't see the court much as a rookie, averaging only 11 minutes per game in 36 games. The Brewster Academy graduate saw increased action in his second year, starting 12 of 38 games. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes per game during the 2025-26 NBA season.

Atlanta could be adjusting its cap space to eventually acquire Boston's star guard. Atlanta finished the season hot, ending the year with a 20-6 record that included an 11-game winning streak. The Hawks finished 46-36, placing them at No. 6 in the Eastern Conference to face the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. Atlanta gave New York fits, leading the series 2-1 before losing 4-2, including an embarrassing 140-89 Game 6 closeout loss.

"The Sacramento Kings are trading guard Devin Carter," Charania wrote on X. "And a future second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks, sources tell ESPN."

The Hawks will open the Salt Lake City Summer League against the Utah Jazz on July 4, with all games played at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
