Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo has scored the second-most points in NBA history, reaching 82 on a late free throw in the fourth quarter against the Washington Wizards. The feat bests an 81-point effort by Kobe Bryant, and sits behind only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game in the history books.
On the night, Adebayo got to 83 points on 43 shots, going 20-for-43 from the field, 7-for-22 from the 3-point line and 36-for-43 from the free throw line. He has also added nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks to his statline, for an all-around great performance.

The Heat held a sizable lead over the Wizards when he went to the free-throw line, up 23 points at the time of the history-making point. They went on to win 150-129 when the score went final.
Bam Adebayo averaged 18.9 points and 9.8 rebounds on the season, prior to the historic performance. The five-time All-Defense selection has been better known for his contributions on that end, but left no doubt that he can score with anyone in the NBA.
Adebayo’s history-making night wouldn’t have been complete without one last iconic moment. Although, he didn’t break Chamberlain’s gaudy 100-point performance, he got closer than anyone ever has.
Even Kobe.
A night like that deserves to recreate the photo that epitomizes scoring buckets at the highest level in the NBA — Chamberlain holding a single sheet of paper with the number 100 and only the number 100 printed on it.
Adebayo hit his own version of the simple celebration.

Adebayo and his Heat do get a night off following this season-defining performance. They play the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
What does the Heat big man have in store for an encore? Thursday will tell the tale. For now, he can bask in the glory of scoring the second-most points in a single NBA game.
And know only one person has ever scored more.
