The NBA is on the cusp of its upcoming offseason, but as of Friday, the Phoenix Suns have yet to announce a trade for All-Star forward Kevin Durant.
Durant, 36, prefers to be sent to either the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat or Houston Rockets, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. However, six to eight total teams have shown interest in Durant, making the decision more challenging for the Suns as they also want to make the best deal for themself, not just for Durant.
The situation has even confused podcast host Bill Simmons, who isn’t sure if Durant will be traded by the end of the summer because of a few rumors.
“By all accounts, the offers are not good,” Simmons said during Friday’s episode of "The Bill Simmons Podcast” with guests Zach Lowe and Rob Mahoney. “The word on the street is the offers have sucked and they’ve made the classic mistake of what happened with David Griffin in New Orleans last season.”
Griffin, the former New Orleans Pelicans executive president of basketball operations, attempted to revamp the team by building the roster around forward Zion Williamson. Ultimately, Griffin ended up trading Brandon Ingram in February but did acquire guard Dejounte Murray in 2024 before his termination in April following six unsuccessful seasons from 2019-25.
“We got to make some moves but the rest of the league is like heard you had to make some moves so here’s my offer,” Simmons added. “I don’t know how this [Kevin Durant] thing plays out anymore. I assume it’s going to be Houston."
The Rockets could be the frontrunner for Durant because of their high amount of draft picks and depth, which Phoenix might be interested in acquiring, but Simmons thinks that trade might not happen if Houston is not willing to make a substantial offer.
“At some point that price becomes low enough that if you’re Phoenix, you might have to go; Look [Kevin Durant], we tried to trade you,” Simmons continued. “There were no good deals. We’re keeping you.”
But an entire offseason between now and next season awaits Durant and Phoenix, so anything could happen within that timeframe.
