After six years, Billy Donovan has decided to step down from the head coach position for the Chicago Bulls. The decision came shortly after the Bulls ended their season on an untoward note with a 31-51 record.
Donovan joined the Bulls in 2020 after serving as a head coach for the OKC Thunder for five seasons. According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, Donovan decided to resign following days of intense meetings with the team.
“The Bulls made clear that the organization wanted Donovan back after making sweeping changes to their front office, but Donovan held an option in his contract for next season and elected to step down after extensive meetings with team ownership in the last week, sources said,” Charania reported.

Earlier this month, with just a week left before the conclusion of the regular season, the Bulls ownership fired president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversle. The drastic step showed the franchise was willing to shake things up.
“Donovan determined he wanted to give the team a clean break, provide the ability for the organization to undergo its front office search, and allow the new top basketball executive to make the next coaching hire,” Charania wrote.
The Bulls have a lot to address this offseason. It has been a tough few years for them, and it might start with front office hirings.
In the last 11 years, the team has missed the playoffs nine times. In the remaining two seasons, they have faced an exit in the first round. The Bulls missed the playoffs in their fourth consecutive season.
The franchise has barely been relevant in the league for over a decade now. For Kendrick Perkins, Donovan should have resigned from coaching the Bulls years before.
“He should have been sprinting out of that organization,” he said on ESPN’s First Take. “Let’s be real, the Chicago Bulls have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NBA.”
The Bulls have one of the richest histories in the NBA. With Michael Jordan, the power was concentrated in Chicago. The franchise was also on the rise when they drafted Derrick Rose in 2008.
However, since Rose, they have barely shown the gene of a winning franchise, and Perkins blamed the front office for the failure.
“When we talk about history, when we talk about big market, when we talk about historic franchises, this is a team that has been dysfunctional all across the board,” Perkins added. “They don’t know if they’re coming or going, they don’t know who the lead is, they don’t know who their franchise guy is.”
The Bulls don’t seem to have a clear plan for the next few years, and their condition may not change if they aren’t able to pull a blockbuster trade.
What do you think? Can the Bulls pull a worthy trade in the offseason to achieve better results?
