Veteran coach Billy Donovan may already have his eye on what’s next. Namely, the Warriors.
According to a Sports Illustrated report (via Fullcourtpass), Donovan is essentially waiting to see if the Golden State job becomes available before deciding on his next move.
That’s where things get interesting.
The Warriors haven’t made a coaching change. Steve Kerr is still in place. But his contract situation and a disappointing season have at least opened the door to questions about what comes next.
Enter Donovan. He recently stepped away from the Bulls after six seasons, doing so as the organization begins a full reset. At the time, it was clear Donovan intended to keep coaching.
Now we may have an idea why.

Nothing is official. Nothing is imminent. But if Donovan is indeed holding out for Golden State, it suggests he believes something could change.
And in this league, that’s usually enough to get people talking.
As an aside, there’s also been talk that Donovan could consider a return to the college ranks. But as one league source told Hoops Wire, that would probably only happen if he couldn’t find a match in the NBA first.
