The Los Angeles Lakers have had a strong start to the 2025-26 NBA season as they currently sit third in the Western Conference standings with an 18-7 record.
Of course, the Lakers entered the season with high expectations as they were projected to be a top team in the West thanks to their star trio of LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
So far, the Lakers have been able to live up to expectations as they look like a clear threat in the West, though they may look to make some moves ahead of the trade deadline to upgrade their roster.
While Los Angeles could focus on upgrading their depth behind their star trio or their frontcourt, though Deandre Ayton has fit in well for them, they could also elect to try and add another star to their lineup.
Los Angeles has been linked to many players ahead of the trade deadline, though one player they could try to acquire is Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving.
Dallas has had a disappointing start to the season, which has caused many players on their roster to be the subject of trade rumors, and while Irving is currently sidelined while recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last season, the star guard may draw trade interest.
The Lakers could be among the teams to potentially show interest in Irving due to his prior connections with Doncic and James, though there have been reports that the Mavericks may look to keep him on their roster.
In a potential trade, the Lakers could send a package of Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia and multiple first-round picks to the Mavericks in exchange for Irving.
While moving on from these players could be a difficult decision for the Lakers to make, especially Hachimura due to him being a key piece in the starting lineup, swapping them for Irving could work out well later down the road when he returns from injury.
For Irving, he could be a great fit with the Lakers due to him already having chemistry with Doncic during their time with the Mavericks, along with James during their time with the Cleveland Cavaliers that saw them win a championship together.
The 33-year-old guard is coming off a season in which he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 40.1% from three.
The star point guard would provide the Lakers with another reliable playmaker and scorer who could help them compete for a championship this season once he returns from injury.
While this trade could work out well for Los Angeles, they may elect to hold off due to Irving’s ACL recovery as he still does not have a timeline for return.
Dallas may also elect to keep Irving on their roster even if they do decide to make major changes to their roster this season as they could see him as a key piece for the future next to Cooper Flagg.
