Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Lands Mavericks Coach Jason Kidd With Knicks

Yes, you read that headline correctly.

The New York Knicks are interested in hiring Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd as their new coach after firing Tom Thibodeau.

However, the Mavericks won’t let the Knicks talk to Kidd, who has two years left on his contract.

But what if Kidd decides he wants to leave Dallas for New York? Remember back in 2014 when Kidd left the Brooklyn Nets for the Milwaukee Bucks? The Bucks had to trade two second-round draft picks to the Nets to get the Hall of Famer.

There is no evidence that Kidd wants to leave the Mavericks. However, should that become a reality, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between Dallas and New York:

Dallas Mavericks receive: 2026 Washington Wizards protected first-round pick (via NY) and 2026 first-round swap rights (top-4 protected)

New York Knicks receive: Jason Kidd

Kidd has a coaching record of 362-339 in the regular season and 31-33 in the playoffs. He played for the Knicks for one season in 2012-13 and was a superstar with the New Jersey Nets for many years.

The Mavericks have the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They are expected to draft Duke’s Cooper Flagg.

Veteran NBA insider Marc Stein doesn’t think Kidd is looking to leave the Mavericks for the Knicks. Stein covers the Mavericks in Dallas and has a strong pulse on that franchise.

“I do not think he is looking to leave Dallas,” Stein said on the DLLS Mavs podcast. “He is very settled here. His family is very settled here. And he is very close with the two superstars (Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving) who are in place.”

It doesn’t appear that Kidd will leave the Mavericks for the Knicks, who made the conference finals this year for the first time since 2000.

However, no one saw Dallas trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

With that said, anything can happen in today’s NBA.
