Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Sends Kevin Durant to Knicks, Karl-Anthony Towns to Suns

The New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns had drastically different 2024-25 seasons.

The Knicks reached the conference finals for the first time since 2000, losing to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

Meanwhile, the Suns were so bad that they didn't even make the play-in tournament. Interestingly, despite having diagonally opposite seasons, both franchises have got rid of their respective head coaches.

New York fired Tom Thibodeau as head coach on Tuesday, while Phoenix fired Mike Budenholzer in April.

The Suns are hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott to replace Budenholzer.

Phoenix is widely expected to trade Kevin Durant this offseason and one NBA analyst proposed that the Suns send Durant to New York.

Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report proposed that the Suns trade Durant to the Knicks for Karl-Anthony Towns, Pacome Dadiet and a 2032 first-round pick.

"A sizable and vocal contingent of Knicks fans probably wouldn't be too upset to see him moved, especially if it was for KD's expiring contract," Bailey wrote. "Part of the frustration with KAT is a contract that runs through 2027-28 and pays him $61 million that year (when he has a player option).

"This trade would obviously get the Knicks off the hook for most of that deal, while also landing them a bit more dynamic shot creator who's more mobile on defense.

"For the Suns, this is another interesting guard-big duo for Devin Booker, especially since he and KAT are famously close friends. Getting a pick and a prospect doesn't hurt either."

Durant will make $54.7 million next season in the final year of his contract, while Towns will make $53.1 million. KAT is eligible to sign an extension this offseason that could add another two years to his deal.

A two-time champion, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season. He turns 37 in September.

Meanwhile, Towns averaged 24.4 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his first season with the Knicks. He turns 30 in November.
