Tim Duncan has long been regarded as one of the greatest players in the NBA's history. With five championships, two MVP awards, and a remarkable 15 All-Star appearances, his accolades speak for themselves.
However, beneath the trophies and statistics lay an unwavering commitment to excellence that set him apart. His work ethic and professionalism left a long-lasting impression on those who shared the court with him.
Boban Marjanovic, the towering Serbian center, signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015, eager to learn from the team's storied culture. Although it was Duncan's swan song in the league, the legendary power forward wasn't content to coast through his farewell season. Marjanovic quickly realized that the Hall of Famer's meticulous approach wasn't just a reputation but a daily reality.

Recalling a specific moment, the Serb vividly illustrated the Spurs legend's relentless dedication.
"Since I haven't played in two games, I decided to stay and do some extra work," Marjanovic said. "We were on the road, I think we were in San Fransisco. I stayed for shooting practice… Tim Duncan, who played one of the games, was leaving, and he looked around; he didn't see anyone, and then he came back and started working with me. Showing me defensive moves, how to shoot a certain way."
For a rookie experiencing his first NBA season, this interaction was transformative. Here was an NBA legend already a lock for the Hall of Fame, taking time to guide a younger teammate despite his own aches and limitations. Moments like these solidified why the dynamic center was considered the heart of the Spurs' dynasty.
The Spurs' success over two decades was built on the foundation of their legendary Big Three—Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. The 6-foot-11 superstar was the anchor, leading the team on the court and exemplifying the selflessness and discipline that became the franchise's hallmark.
In the 2014 NBA Finals. After being crushed by the Miami Heat the year prior, the Spurs returned with surgical precision to dismantle their rivals. Even in the twilight of his career, Duncan averaged a double-double, led everyone else in total rebounds in the series, and helped secure a decisive Game 5 victory to seal the championship.
For teammates like the Serbian center, it was clear that No. 21's commitment to preparation laid the groundwork for such performances—this culture shaped him and others who passed through San Antonio.

"Whenever I'm having a tough time, I remember him and Manu Ginobili, how they were running from baseline to baseline, making that extra effort, but they didn't. He was 39 years old, and he was running from baseline to baseline. He wasn't the fastest, and I wasn't the one running, but he was running from the line," Marjanovic said.
Now a Hall of Famer, the former MVP's consistency inspired teammates to not just follow his lead but embrace his mindset. It's no wonder many players describe their time alongside the legend as a career-defining experience.
